1964 Spindle Axle location same as 1982?[/h]
Are there different specs on the location of the front axle on a 1969-1982 front spindle versus 1964?

My measurements show the 1964 axle location to be nearly 2 inches lower than the SSB A137-2 disk brake conversion kit.

I asked Stainless Steel Brakes Corporation Tech Help who replied:

"The spindles are 69 to 82 Corvette pieces which are required to install the A137-2 kit. They have no affect on the ride height of your vehicle."

My 1964 is sitting extremely high in the front since installing these spindles from the SSB disk brake conversion kit. Looks like a drag car-not my style.:mad

Please assist in figuring this out.
Thanks.

All I can think of: Have you moved the car since the installation? It should settle after being driven.

edit: I just saw your post about the springs. Maybe they are the reason the car is sitting high....

I don't recall any relocation of the axle on the spindle. There was a change in diameter for '69 (IIRC) but not location. Sounds like your springs are the problem either with type or installation.

Pls share factory specs for 1964 and 1982 front axles - same location on spindle?

Thanks, but I have changed out the front springs twice, taken out the front springs and disconnected the front sway bar--basically the car was sitting on the spindles only and is several inches high.

I measured the axle location on my original 1064 spindle compared to the SS Brakes 1969-82 spindle and the axle location is about 2 inches higher on the spindle.
Should they be the same?

Thanks again.
I have not driven my car much and won't until I can get the front end down and attitude looking correct.
Got the rear end/spring all jacked up to try and level the poor girl--still funky!

If your spindles are 2" higher then your nose would be 2" lower. What I think you have is springs that are not seated in the top pockets, BTDT. Easy done if you didn't use a spring compressor.

Post a picture of the measurement you're making on the spindle.

Tonight, I was looking at some really old parts info, dated 1976.

Back then, GM listed four front spindles, or knuckles as GM calls them for 63-64, 65-67, 68 and 69-76.

I know the difference between 68 and 69-76 is the diameter of the spindle itself. I'll bet the difference between 63-64 and 65-67 is the brakes (drum vs. disc).

Is it possible that the spindle height was changed? The parts book doesn't give a clue.

Measured from the top of the spindle upper ball joint face to the centerline (centerdrill) of the spindle the '72 and the '64 both measure 7" +/- a few RCCH.

Guess that answers the question on spindle height.

I'm with the "GM Junkie". Either the wrong springs are installed or the springs are installed improperly.

I was under a "68 Chevelle today and just for reasons that escape me I checked the spindle height, 5", about. Much different layout with the caliper on the back of the rotor versus the front mount of the Corvettes.

As I noted in your other thread, the spindle heights are the same from '63-'82; your ride height issue is related to the springs, not the spindles.
