Snap goes the cam shaft

Thanks for that.. how many valves were TOAST?

as I recall on mine, 3 valves actually snapped at the shaft.

I haven't seen a whole vette yet that wasnt worth the effort.

please don't let it become a bed n' breakfast for critters

Never lost a cam in a SBC but I saw one break in a Detroit Diesel boat engine. They tried to fix it on the cheap without tearing down the bottom end.

After the repairs the engine started ok and all the gages look good so we took the boat out for a test run.

A few seconds after the throttle was pushed forward things went bang. A con rod came through the side of the block and sawed the block almost in half before things stopped spinning.

If she can't afford a crate engine look for a good runner in the junk yards.... almost anything will probably be better and cheaper than trying to put together the pieces.

BTW It is always good to see you Vig.:D

Gerry

I would agree with you.. BUT the cam back gear doesn't turn at ALL

HEY SPANISH~

So I THINK I will talk with the owner.. and see what she wants to do...

But Keep the Data COMING~

Let me make sure i have my facts straight.

As you turn the motor over by hand, you see the first rocker on cylinder 1 and 2 (the front on each side) move. That means the front of the cam IS moving.

You do not see the distributor rotating. That means the back of the cam is NOT moving.

Ask her expert friend what can cause the front of the came to move and not the back of the cam.

There is no part in an engine that can not break. Frames bend, blocks crack, seals disintegrate, and shafts snap.

I had the timing chain on my 82 slip. Luckily there was no valve/piston contact. I just had to replace the gears and chain.

Whatever she decides to do, make sure that she learns how to check the oil from now on.

Fact's straight

( Oh the Horror! )

A 350/290hp GM crate motor (about $1400) will be the fastest and least costly solution, and will be a direct bolt-in.

:beer

I hate to ask, but who was driving when this happened?

(lets humor the "expert" friend).
Assume the cam is fine.
What would it cost to replace all of the broken things EXCEPT the cam?
A cam is $100 maybe $200?

A crate motor is definitely the fastest. Probably the cheapest (depending on the crate).

I think i'm going to go home and check my oil.

Good luck!

From bad to worse

Subject:Trisha's vette On 9/20/07 12:53 PM,
The Jeep across the street rolled down their driveway and on top of her car.

E mail cont

Gina (across the street) came over last night about 9:30am. The dogs went nuts of course, but Trisha was already talking to her out the window, Gina saying something about parked cars. I just figured she was talking about Trish's Suburban parked in front of HER house. She told Trish her car had rolled across the street and was "really close" to her vette. She didn't go outside and look, had her pjs on already. Gina didn't say it had hit. Anyway, Trish saw it this morning. At least she can get a paint job out of it.
