I am hopeful someone can shed some light on my PKE problem ('96).
The drivers door makes a low frequency buzzing sound when I press the "door" button on the key fob and does not unlock. This is a new fob, programming went normal, pass door unlocks properly when the button is depressed, hatch opens normally when that button is pressed. Walking to & away from the door with the fob in hand and the system activated does not produce the locking & unlocking automatically.
Both doors lock & unlock normally with the button on the door panel. This tells me the system and its solenoids, linkage & wiring are fine. I had the door panel off and the antenna & wiring look normal (nothing broke or disconnected), if more info is needed please let me know.
Welcome any and all suggestions and help.
Thanks

I would start by getting a FSM and going through the diagnostic chart don't use Haynes or Chilton's there just generic. Poor at best.

Does the Divers door lock and unlock with the power lock switch on the inside door panel??;shrug;shrug;shrug

When you press the door button on the fob the driver's door makes a buzzing sound. If you hold the door button down, for 5 secs or more, does the system cycle "on" & "off"?

The fob has no control over the driver's door, only the pass door when the system is inactive. Both doors, or one, can be selected if system is active.

Sounds like the PKE is not active. Also, make sure the key locks are vertical.

I'm on my 3 rd glass of wine so bear with me............:chuckle

The drivers door makes a light buzzing sound, pass door unlocks, PKE is active, holding the button down changes nothing just unlocks the pass door once. I don't hear any cycling back & forth. This now has me puzzled (actually frazzled) . FSM not much of a help here. Any more help or ideas is appreciated

Go to the PKE section in the FSM. There is a diagnostic section that may help isolate the problem. I assume your familiar with using the DLC to pull codes?

Have you checked the fuses? There's more than one.

A sound as you describe would make me believe something ain't right, and is getting HOT in the process. I wouldn't do it too often, without seeing the source/part of the noise.

I have not been able to corect this yet. The FSM brings me right to a dead end and is virtually no help. The fuses are fine. It almost sounds like the solenoid does not have enough strength to unlock the door when pressing the fob button, but it is ok when using the door lock switch on the door panel. I don't see anything getting hot, but I dont overcycle it anyway.
Keep thinking I need all the help I can get.
Thanks

I assume the PKE diagnostics didn't show anything?
