Hey all! :w

I have an '04 of which the clear plastic (or glass) piece that covers the HUD mirror is missing off my car. NOT the square bezel piece on the dash, but the clear curved piece that protects the mirror. The HUD functions properly, it's just exposed. Anyone know where I can find this? The local Chevy stealership says they don't show that piece as available, and everything on Ebay is an entire HUD. I've had no luck with any Corvette parts sites, specialist etc either.

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, GM really really prefers to sell parts as assemblies; it's pretty difficult to find component parts in cases like these. Sometimes you get lucky (as I did with an HVAC panel knob for my '97 GMC Jimmy) if you're persistent about getting your GM dealer to dig a bit deeper. No guarantees, though.

An alternative (albeit a long-shot) is to try to track down the supplier (to GM) for the OEM HUD assembly, and see if you can get that component from them (or their supplier). Odds are, though, that you'll need to pull one from a salvaged HUD assembly; if you can find someone trying to unload a non-function HUD assembly, it might be just as cost-effective as a new piece of glass from whomever...

Good luck!

By the way: any idea what happened to your glass...?

You ........ m-i-g-h-t ...... try to see if you can fit a piece of clear plastic to the underside of the dash bezel
as a temporary dust/dirt protector until you can find the correct piece. Don't know if it will affect the operation
of the HUD though.......

Hey Tim. The glass was gone when I took deliver of the car. Nothing appears to be broke, and I cant see any evidence of that piece in the bottom of the hud. It's just gone :confused

Hello Andy! I have given that some thought but haven't taken the time to really check in to it. I need to get the manuals for the C5 like you recommended. I hate to tinker with things for fear of breaking something. Replacement trinkets for this thing are spendy!

Very odd... My '04 has the HUD as well, and I know the glass piece is there, 'cause I've cleaned it once or twice.

I tend to be the same way, but have slowly learned that, if you take your time, there's not too much you can do to really harm anything -- at least nothing that can't usually be undone. Now, if you just flat-out break something, yeah, it can put a dent in your wallet sometimes...

OK, so I found a used HUD that is no good, it's broke, and for parts use only...The glass is good, which is what I'm looking for. Does anyone know if this piece can be removed easily without breaking or cracking it? It appears to just rest on the little felt type molding. I'm sure it's glued, but to what extent? Thanks!

That's a rare fix I'm thinking Aaron. You might try and google it to see if anyone else on any forum has delt with it. The manual may deal with it but since the unit comes assembled you may need to track down the folks who built them and ask them.......or you can just wing it......are you buying the whole used assembly or just the glass?

Good evening Marcus! It's the part I found is the whole assembly. A new unit is about $280 through a place in Pennsylvania. I really don't want to spend that much since I just need the glass piece.

I haven't been able to track down any other posts here at CAC with this issue. I haven't tried the Youtube avenue yet, it is on my list for tonight though

Try taking the bezel off and see if it just lays/snaps/sits there & the bezel holds it in. Maybe a little silicone sealer.

:)

How does it look Aaron? I'm with Froggy, remove the bezel and see if it sits down in there. Never had mine off......

Hey Froggy and Toms01

I managed to get the lense under the bezel. I'm going to try to get it back out due to the following...

The lens is the correct shape and size, but it's also flat, but flexible as to contour with the curve of the HUD. I need to get some double sided 3M sticky tape and put along the left and right side of either the lens, or the HUD itself. With the lense under the bezel and flat, it reflects the outside light back on to the windshield, giving me a whiteish 'box' to look through. Kinda annoying!

The lense is totally clear, so the display on the windshield is unaffected. Once I get the sticky tape in there and the lens curved, the reflection of it in the windshield will be gone.

I don't know how to get the bezel off. All the posts I see referring to the bezel states that its attached to the HUD itself. I don't wanna try prying on it with the fear of breaking any tabs and then needing one of those too. Sure not a lot of room between the dash and the windshield!

I searched Digital Corvettes and Corvette Forum both....verdict is in...the dash pad HAS to come out in order to get the HUD bezel out because it is screwed in from UNDERNEATH the pad. WHAT were they thinking when they done this?? :mad;shrug.

Sooo, after seeing how all that comes out, theres NO way I'm even considering that route. I did get my lens out. Gonna do the double sided sticky tape tomorrow and call it a job well done!

Check out the 'how to'...grr! lol! How to: Dash removal and Hud install - Corvette Forum
