Chasing the "service traction control/reduced engine power" bug in my 97 coupe. Spent $436 at two different shops and still have the problem. I'm thinking the next step is to change out the accelerator pedal postion sensor. Is that something I can do or is that a shop job?
Thanks for any suggestions on attempting to solve this very frustrating problem. Most of the time the car goes to redueced power mode at low engine speeds...very little throttle. Doesn't seem to effect the car when it's on crusie control.
Thanks again for "wisdom" from those who've tread this path before me.....

Are these shops doing the diagnosis of the fault or are you doing it yourself but having shops do the parts changes? If you DIY, do you have the 97 Factory Service Manual?

HI there,

Lets first look at what was already replaced. What was changed? Is the code constant or is it intermittent::??

My thought is that you might not have to replace any parts at all.

Let me know what you have, Paul

Think, I've solved it.

First, a big thanks to Toms01, Hib, and Paul for shooting some thoughts my way. I was taking a list of codes into the shops and also leaving codes on the DIC for them. This car had 15K on it when I bought it. Took a quick look at the CARFAX to confirm "one owner" but finally got my own copy to see all the details. Come to find out, this 97 couple had been sitting for the better part of 10 years in a shed or garage. Having been in radio broadcasting for 40 years, I worked with an engineer who always said, "try the simpliest fixes first", as in loose or corroded connections. I began checking for broken/damaged wires/ bad grounds, corroded connections and think the culprit was in the large connectors behind the right fron tire....is that the ECM or the PCM? I disconnected both connectors, shot some electrical contact cleaner on them along with the front connector to what I believe is the TAC(couldn't get the back one off). Put it all back together and went for a spin. Everything worked but after shutting the car off once, got several alarms...service traction control, service ABS, service engine soon with the associated systems warning lights on. Got home, disconnected the battery....reconnected it, started it up and have not experienced any alarms in several outtings. Tri:)ed it several times at very little throttle, no alarms.....HEY, I'm having fun driving this thing again....when it's running like this,IT'S SWEET!!!
You all know what I'm talking about....
Hope it holds.....am saying "THANKS", and again affirming the valuable input from those of you on this forum!!!

Make sure your battery is up to snuff.....those cars take a lot of battery power to keep the electronics from doing weird things......:thumb

The last chapter?(I hope)

I thought I had this reduced engine power problem solved....but.....not quite. It surfaced again. Not a problem on crusie control but with very mild application of throttle using the accelerator pedal, it goes into reduced power(some of the time). On the verge of purchasing a new accelerator pedal assembly/w sensor, but was finally able to figure out how to remove my car's pedal assembly by checking a picture of the pedal assembly out on e-bay and discovering only two bolts hold it onto the firewall. Removed it, took the sensor off the pedal assembly, sprayed some cleaner on it, sprayed cleaner on the contacts, put it back together, re-installed it and the car has been purring like a kitten. Last chapter of this episode? I hope so. Paul, I was grateful I didn't have to buy any new parts, and was able to do the work myself...saved me alot of $$.
Again, thanks to all who weighed in on this frustrating "reduced power mode" problem.
