Hello All, need some help here. I will hopefully own my C3 later this week.....question about the casting #'s on the block. 1 - is it easy to get to to read. 2 - exactly how mant digits will it be to determine if it is the original engine? Thanks, Ray

Look near the front passenger side of the engine and you should see a flat surface with numbers (it may need cleaning), write this and the VIN number down and you can either post or look in a black book and decipher what you are buying. Not sure of how many digits...

Pad on the block at the front of the right head will contain two stamps; the larger is from the engine assembly plant; smaller is the VIN derivitive. '78 shown; others will be similar.

This is great, thanks - just to be sure, the smaller #'s on the bottom are all part of the vin?

You want both numbers to be correct. Engine stamp identifies the engine and should be a Corvette suffix. VIN derivitive should match the VIN of your car.

Expect to have to do some cleaning on the pad. What's on it may or may not be legible until you clean off the accumulated road gook. Steel wool or a scotchbrite pad will work. A good flash light might come in handy.
:)

Please do not use anything abrasive on the pad as this may inadvertently remove the broach marks which are one of the indicators of an original unmolested engine. Paint remover works just fine.

Ray (and Lance), you can use the CAC's Tech Center to find all this information and much more!
