1985 Speedo jury rig

While I am not new its been 4 years since I sold my last Vette so I have returned. Wish I had said "I'll be back!"
I bought an 85 this week off of eBay and am going to pick it up tomorrow. I am told the dash is dead and maybe not even in the car at this time. I was wondering if I could rig up a speedo or tach for the trip home. Its about a hundred miles and I really don't want to get caught speeding! It doesn't even have to be right just something to gauge myself by. I am pretty good with wiring and stuff I just don't know if there is anyplace I can get a good signal from? Maybe the ALDL port or the dash plug or even out on the back of the distributor?

I believe the tach works just like a regular tack with the wire going to the distributor that is connected to the gear...sorry if that doesn't help but I am not familiar with tachs and how they work, hopefully someone else can chime in and help if you still need it...Sorry

Was the 85 wired for Speed Controlled Volume on the radio? If so you can pick up the speedo sig from the radio plug however I have no idea what kind of a meter you would need to interpret this info.

You can pick up the tach sig at the distributor or at the tach filter or use one of the digital tachs that pick up the pulse by induction from a sparkplug wire.

Wouldn’t it be easier just to drive with the flow of traffic or follow whoever takes you to pickup the car?

You can probably look at the mile markers on the highway and with the use of a watch you can just about clock your speed. Big problem if you travel 15 tenth's in one minute!
