1986 convt. noise?

My 86 vette makes an intermittent noise when I shift the automatic trans. from park to reverse. Sometimes she will go into gear easy, other times she goes into gear hard with the "clunk noise". From a stop, if i punch the pedal, the "clunk" returns. If I feather the pedal from a stop, it will clunk two or three times as long as the car is under a load. At cruising speeds there are no noises, or vibrations. I am not sure where to start since the same noise is intermittent from park to reverse, but is always a sure thing when taking off from a dead stop. If anyone can help, i would really appreciate it.

Sounds like a bad u-joint to me, and you have six.

I agree, it certainly does sound like a u-joint.
