Please share opinions of the L98 engine vs. the LT1. Also, any feedback on the superchip mod.

Did the 91 L98 have the same Optispark ignition? Is the L98 with aluminum or cast iron heads?

In general, is the 91 model year a desireable choice?

Thanks

I would buy the lt1 94 or newer.

The L98 is ok but no power on the top end and you have to change chips to do anything to the engine. L98 is iron head but their was one year not HEI DIST..
The Lt1 is alum heads with opti.

Late 86 to 1991 L98s were Aluminum Headed motors..

As for what to buy... Buy the Newest C4 you can afford

Buy a LT1 with the vented optic spark. LT1s will beat L98s in a bad day

l-98 /ls1

Id buy the newest vette in the best shape i could afford. I have the hyper chip and 160 thermo. in my 89 coupe and I think the car runs cooler then it ever did before the swap, ( also had both head gaskets ,intake man. gaskets, and water pump replaced) Bear in mind that the l-98 has a great deal of low end torqe and should take the ls-1 of the line and for most of the q-mile before the ls-1 moter hits its stride. Im running after market ignitigion junk and have the intake worked, with the plenuem ported and matched to the intake manifold. yada yada. I feel that gm sort of left us l-98 owners out in the cold, there isnt much you can do to the moter that will let ya compete with the newer rigs without going deeper into the moter and your wallet than you would wish.
But damn , I love my car! see ya on the road! Doug Castner, aka captbane@ yahoo.com

But the 1991 L98 is probably the best L98 Vette you can buy. It has the most current C4 body style, updated interior, and the most power from that engine. And yes. The L98 has more torque and develops in earlier than the LT1. Plus, the L98 doesn't have the dreaded Opti-Spark. I believe R&T tested a 1991 L98 and it did a 0-60 in 5.6 sec. The LT1 will probably do 0-60 in 5 sec. Big difference huh? The difference will be in topspeed and quarter mile, when the LT1's added 50 bhp at the top end comes into play.

Those who have driven the L98 & LT1 will often admit that it's slightly more fun to drive the L98 around town and in the twisty roads because of the extra low grunt coming off the line, compared to the LT1. But that's all relative. Both engines are great and fun to drive on the Corvette.

I have had nothing but luck with my L98. In fact it took my uncle's 92 Lt1 when he bought it with 22k on the odometer. From 0 to about 75 it pulls crazy, and on the street what more do you want. The torque is nice. If you are going to buy the car and keep it, the L98 can be modded. Either way they are both corvettes and both very nice cars.

The actual performance difference between a 91 L98 and a 92-96 Lt1 is about 4 tenths in the quarter mile all things equal. the Lt1 will havea better top end charge but at the expense of some low end torque. L98's have a great aftermarket following and can be made as fast as you want. A 91 Vette is a nice choice for the first time buyer.

Any Vett

Gents, let make it clear...

any VETT is a good choice for a fist time buyer

My first vett was a 92 convertible, it burned on the freeway, it pierced my heart. Just bought my second 5 weeks ago a 95 coupe

Happy Thanksgiving!!!:v

I like the low end pull for slip-sliding around town. It will always spin going into 2nd if I keep the gas on. Hard on it a bit but I bought it for a toy. There is an 84 coupe down the road for about 3KUS...

I love the torque of the L98 and I would not trade it for nothing. If you are concerned about power ask MadMic, I think with all the free mods and headers and some Drag Radials he is in the very low 13's. Not bad for a 18 year old car. But a Corvette is a Corvette, they are all great.

yeah it's not doing too bad! wait till spring she will be a different beast most definetly! :D

I suppose with what I payed for the car and the price of the mods I could have bought an lt1. But I wanted more than 70 extra hp. But I have 200 more hp this way. And she'll pull to 6200 without a problem.:D

Stock block +30, with Oliver billet main caps , eagle stroker crank and 6"rods , Comp cam, AFR alum 190 heads full P&P, rollers rockers , TPIS bigmouth manifold and runners and plenum, 58 mm TB , TPIS long tube headers. TPIS stage V chip.
flowmasters.

Now don't make me take all you on in my 84 L83 Machine. I suck up modified L98's and LT1's so fast I gotta pull over and pull them out of my air cleaner. :D
