Hello all,

We live in B.C. and have been having some pretty cold days/nights. My convertable is having some real moisture issues and the dealer is stumped. Inside windows fog up every night and underside of the trunk lid is literally dripping wet. Needless to say so all the carpet material in the trunk is moist and in the wells, the insulation and puddles need to be dried up.

Ideas?

Moisture Problem

Let me take a throw at this issue, first check to see if water/moisture is entering your vette by some other source, secondly at Marine stores (boats) they sell a small round dehumidifier, purchase one of these and place in the trunk of the vette. We use these dehumidifiers in our closet on the boat to reduce the moisture.

Rain leaks in all around my windows and Targa top on my 2004 and once the carpet gets soaked a drop in temp will cause condensation on the inside of the windows and the metal parts of the Targa roof. It has spent weeks at the dealer trying to find and stop the leaks. However, from 40 years experience I know that any type of removable top will leak and anyone who says differently simply doesn't know what they are talking about.

The only way to prevent condensation inside is to keep it dry inside and the only way to keep it dry inside is to store the car inside or use a cover that is completely waterproof. A NOAH cover oe any other type of breathable cover will make the leaking worse.

I use three covers to keep my car from leaking. Hey, its just part of owning a sports car.

Brian,

I had a similar situation in my 2001. I found that packages that I kept in the storage compartment were soggy. It turned out to be water leaking into the trunk through the bolt holes for the trunk hinge. In my case, it was on the driver's side, and I was able to confirm the leak with a garden hose.

The weatherstripping that seals the trunk is elevated above a well - kind of like a moat - that goes all the way around the trunk. The moat channels the water to several drains. Inside the moat is the hinge mounting plate. The bolts go through the body panel and the corresponding nuts are welded to a plate on the underside of this panel. I tried running a bead of automotive body sealer (silicone sealer available at any auto parts store) around the perimeter of the plate, but that didn't work; probaby due to the contour of the plate.

On my second attempt, I removed each bolt, one at a time. I could see that there was some kind of sealant there already - probably just not enough. I then squeezed a bead of the sealer around the hole, and onto the upper portion of the bolt threads and reinstalled. That worked like a charm, and the repair is invisible.
Mine was long out of warrantee before I ever noticed this - probably because it isn't driven much in the rain; but it's nice to have this finally taken care of.

Being an avid boater, stopping leaks has become a full time job. 3M makes a product call 5200 adhesive sealer. Get it at any boat store. This will stop any kind of water leak. Kinda works like a lock tite too if to put it on bolts and stuff. Much better then regular silicone. Hope this helps.
