700R4 and 4.11 Gear

Anybody running a 700R4 and 4.11 Gear? I have a 1976 Stingray L-48. Dynoed at a measly 168hp @ the wheels with full race cam, and dual quads =( I am taking this out and throwing in a 383 stroker 430hp. I am installing a 700R4 Trans. I have a 3.08 or 3.23 gear now. Thinking of installing a 4.11. Any ideas or comments? The car is driven for cruizing =) I currently have a 3500 stall speed, and will have to switch with the 700R4. With a 4.11 gear, should I go 2200RPM stall, or 3000?

Call Bow Tie Overdrives and talk to Steve. I have a motor that supposedly dyno'd at 580hp, a 700r4 trans, 3.54 gear and he recommended a 2600 stall convertor. This was a pretty involded process to decide and they asked lots of questions I never thought of asking, it made it easier to figure out what I wanted/needed.

The 4.11 seems a bit high even for the 700r4 trans, with my 3.54 I get great take off and excellent gas mileage on the highway, at about 90mph I'm doing about 2700/2800rpm, I actually wish I would have gone with a 3.23 or 3.33 instead for better top speed. If you never take the car off city streets the 4.11 will probably be good but then it defeats the purpose of the 700r4 trans I think.

Check this site, they have a gear/rpm calculator on it somewhere. http://www.700r4.com/

I have 76 chassis w/ls6,2004r,4:11.

Car had a 3:36 initially, although was strong had excessive wheelspin first/second. went to 4:11 and although still has lots of wheelspin is less excessive due to lower wheel speed. With the overdrive and lockup final ratio is approx 3/1 (as compared to non overdrive). Kinda wish would have gone to 4:56.

Use of 700r4 is more prevalaint, however swap is much more difficult. 2004r is almost bolt in. I am told ratio spread is better in 200, however first is deeper in 700 and od is .66 vs .75 in 200. As to durability Grand Nationals used this trans. Check w/Bowtie overdrives, they have an excellent website and answered questions I had been seeking answers to for over a year in minutes. They can head you in the proper direction, with either trans.

LINKAGE IS CRITICAL.

I, too, run 3.70 (3.73s) with a 700R4, tho mine is behind a bone-stock Cross-Fire in my '82. Originally equipped with 2.87s, it was a pig from a standing start, even-with a 3.06:1 First Gear ratio in the 700R4.

I found out after the gear-swap that ZIP Products 'supposedly' makes a 4.10 ring/pinion gear-set for the standard 'series-3' carriers in my Dana-44; maybe they make a similar 'off-set' ring-gear for you, too...

With the 3.73s, I'm trapping at 91 MPH @ 4300/4400 RPM in 3rd gear; in cruise-mode, my speedo/tach ratio is 3:1 (60MPH @ 20-hundred RPM). Drivability is MUCH better with the .73s; I, too, wish I'd gone deeper, tho...

first, definitely check out the Bowtie Overdrives / 700r4.com website. I to have spoken with these guys and wil be buying my 700R4 in late april. A couple things to note (and it's all explained in detail on their website):
With the stock rear end of 3.08, the new gearing in the 700R4 gives you the equivalent of 4.11 first gear after all the mathematics are done.
Also, the base configuration of the 700R4 is not really spec'd to handle the kind of power you are looking to go for with the 383ci. Best to get the beefed up version at the time of install rather than have it blow up and do it all over again after the fact.
I'm buying mine a bit more beefed up than I need now because next year will come more HP/Torque goodies.
