Hello, I have a 1979 and I am trying to rebuild the clock. I cannot seem to get the center instrument cluster out. I removed the glove box and the four screws attaching the cluster to the dash, but it still won't come out. The Haynes manual talks about two clips that need to slide down, but I cannot locate them.

What am I missing?

Any help would be appreciated.

Turns out the Haynes manual was wrong. There are no clips. I simply pulled out slightly on the bottom and then pulled the whole thing in a downward motion over the heater levers then off.

2 clips

congradulations! so now you know how to get into a can of worms, huh? incidentially, if the 79 is like the 81, there are two clips that hold down the top of the dash....between the speakers and defroster hole on both sides...just took mine out reason I know....but could be this is the two clips Hayes was speaking of.
also, I found a good source for the work you]re getting into w/ the clock: Corvette Clocks by Roger in Jackson, Tenn. He also converts speedometers to 165 mph as well as repair.
good luck.......jim
