'90 Frisbee - Remval Caused Engine Vibration

In mine, its connected directly to the water pump. Removing it was a bad idea - I've been driving a couple hundred miles and there's annoying vibration from about 2,000-4,000 RPMs. This can't be very good for the bearings, and its not a smart idea to leave it off, so I'm putting back on.

I suppose its common practice among C4'ers, especially earlier C4's to remove the frisbee.

I hope the vibration didn't cause any unnecessary parts wear. Has anyone had this experience? Hopefully a few hundred miles of normal driving didn't ruin anything. Any comments?

Interesting this should come up now. I just removed mine, have not driven it yet. Does anyone (may-be c4c5 specialest) have any input about removing the frisbee? Thanks for now!!!!!!:w

It was put there by Chevy engineers to cut vibrations. I would think that they know what they are doing. By the way, it is still on my 90.

tom...

It was put there to lessen the effect of the A/C going on and off. MIne was making an aweful noise after I took it off. I found that the Studs out of the water pump were not threaded down far enough - although the nuts cinched down the pulley was not tight against the water pump. . Because of that the pulley was actually loose. I added a thick washer on each stud and the problem was solved.

It is truely about 10 lbs. of rotating mass. I can't give you a figure - but I could tell the difference.

There are folks who say its a 10chp increase by removing the parasitic effect.

Funny thing is, the vibration happens with the A/C OFF. Just the sheer removal of it from the water pump is causing annoying noise. At any rate, its going back on.

On my '90, the disc weighs much less than in earlier C4's; my guess its only about 3-4 lbs. Not worth the mod to remove for me, I believe the vibration caused by this might cause early bearings & maybe even valvetrain wear.

Took mine off when the Camber Brace was installed because of interference. I guess it depends of the relative balance of all the components driven by the serpentine belt, but I haven't noticed any adverse effect on my 91. I think I read somewhere it was put there because of transient conditions when the AC cycled but I may be wrong. I think GM quit using them on later LT1's.
