New member here, and already saved me some money. A local car lot here has a '92 Vette ZR-1 for $8900. It looks really good both inside and out. I have not been to talk to a salesman, just spotted it when the place was closed. I did my research and found the ZR-1 to be MUCH more expensive. I was thinking the guy MAY have not known what he had, and I could get a real deal. I got the VIN number and checked it (with info from here) and found it to be a YY code body and a P code engine. That was enough to tell me someone spent a lot of time to make a ZR clone. It even had the rectangle exhaust and the wider real wheels and all the ZR-1 badges in the right places. I am assuming with that VIN number it is NOT a ZR-1. Am I correct????

Me thinks it has to be a LT1 at that price.

I’ve seen a few ZR-1 clones... pop the hood, that will let you know for sure.

Check the tach, check for the ZR-1 power key in the dash below the radio area. Check for the flared out rear doors and body work. The windshield would have the laminated front glass with an area cut out for garage door openers/radar detectors. There will be tie downs in the rear hatch area that are used to secure a Z’s flattened tire.

It would have a third brake lamp assembly atop the B pillar, not in the rear bumper as the base cars.

The rear bumper is considerably different. The license plate/backup light area will be wider than the base cars. Rectangular exhausts became standard on all ’92 Corvettes.

Should have a J in the Vin#..and just pop the hood...If you don't see the LT5..:bash its a clone

It's not a ZR-1. The ZR-1 had YZ and an engine code of J in the VIN.

By the way, welcome to the Corvette Action Center. :)

well, regarding my response...better late than never.

I haven't been back out to that lot since I posted my question, but I agree that it must be a clone. I will get that way in a couple of days and check the brake light, tach, fenders, and pop the hood.

I had a 74 vette but had to sell it almost 20 years ago when my son turned 16. Insurance was out of limits. I will be 60 in a few months, and getting the urge really bad for another Vette. Been looking for a few months.

I like this forum, it has a lot of good info. I drive a Chevy HHR and get a lot of good info from that forum.

Thanks for the help and greetings. I'll continue my hunt for a good C4 convertible.

Happy Corvette hunting, KY Dave!

If you take the plunge, be sure to post some pics of your acquisition!

Take a quick look at the back wheels,if you see a huge steam roller of a tire and its well within the fender, its the real deal. The car your lookin at is bogus.
