hey guys just bought 1990 L98 coupe hope someone here can help with a few problems a/c does not work because of comp. failure what should i replace to get sys. working again new comp/drier/accummlator? any thing else, also srs light is on found article about sensors rusting to frame is that likley prob. hope you guys can help thanks geo

if the compressor failed,i would have the system flushed and evacuated by a pro .best bet in the long run .metal fillings can clog the orific tube and drier. spent it know and enjoy the cold air instead of of having it screw up the hottest day . also ...this work wonders for me i cleaned out the evaporator and that real improved the air flow in the car....

As long as you're changing out the compressor, if you haven't already been converted to R-134, it might be a good time to do it.

Don't even think R12. I agree replace acumilator and the orfic and have it flushed . Replace all Orings no sence in risking a leak.
:w

Shop around for the best price on the compressor. The 90 model uses a NipponDenso compressor and it ain't cheap. The local chevy dealer quoted me $1200 without the clutch. Most everybody else, NAPA, Bumper to Bumper, CarQuest, Eckler's, MidAmerica, etc... were in the $500 to $800 range for a new or reman. compressor. Also check and see if you get a warranty with it and if said warranty requires that you purchase a new orifice tube and receiver /dryer. Most places will.

I had to replace mine last July. The best price was a remanufactured unit from Autozone for $299 w/clutch. The orifice tube and receiver /dryer cost about $80 more and that gave me a 2 year warranty on the compressor & clutch. I went ahead and converted to R-134a at that time as well. I had to replace the compressor/clutch again this April. It still worked but rattled like hell. Autozone didn't give me any problems with the warranty exchange.

The R-134a works fine on my black Corvette in the July in Georgia heat.

If you have someone else do the work, get a quote on the oil, flush, R-134 and shop it around too. You'd be amazed at what you can save by getting it yourself versus buying it from the mechanic.

Compressor failure? What happened? Did it sieze up, break up? or did the clutch fail? Is the system contaminated? Although they probably won't even sell you a compressor without replacing the drier, accum. and cap tube assembly it depends on what happened. I've replaced compressors with non replaceable clutches that failed...no need to replace anything else, just evacuate let sit overnight to see if you have any leaks. Also, there is a drop in replacement for 12, forget the name but I can look it up for you if need be. They use it on classics that have AC. Someone here might know the name. I like 12 the best, it's colder! My opinion.
