A C5 techie book...maybe?

Two words: Will Handzel. He's already done the book and it's for sale on Amazon.com.

The reviewer of that book on Amazon was none other than Hib Halverson!

The book would be well-received, especially now that our C5s are no longer "current". I'd like a format that would allow it to be garage-useful, i.e., big enough format to lay open on the workbench or engine and easy enough to wipe the grease off (a well-used book WILL get greasy).

Hib, please include LS1 editing techniques that work! A good 'how to' on tuning would carry a good asking price all by itself! Too many generic books on the subject and not enough vehicle specific out there. Thanks.

Already did the long tube headers and a Shaner S2 throttle body with coolant bypass. Am in to mild custom work, but would be very interested in your book, if you autographed it.

Mods

Typical mods to write about:

Air induction-from air filters to intakes

Headers/exhaust

Valvetrain improvements-rockers/shafts/springs

Oil & tranny coolers

Short shifters

Gear change/upgrade

Lowering the car

Shocks/sway bars and bushings

Forced Induction

Mini tubs and bigger/wider wheels

Good luck Hib. The more information the easier it is for the DIYer. Format it like a Haines manual.

Great idea and I would be the first one to buy.
But heres the BUT
Lawsuit if the mod is unsafe and causes injury to person or damage to vehicle.
Need to talk to a lawyer before you publish.

BUT I'd still buy one

I have seen in other publications, a disclaimer that basicly says the author and publisher assume no liability for anything done by anyone working off the suggestions found within...

It is a sad world we live in, when everything has to have fine print along with it :eek

Good luck Hib - I have ALWAYS enjoyed reading the stuff you have written over the years - dating back through the early 90's and beyond :upthumbs

C5 Upgrades

Great idea, even though I own a C4-ZR1 .... certainly if the data you supply is like the article you did on the 'The King of the Hill' awhile back. I think we all could benefit from your book. Good Luck !

CAC Members-
I'm doing a little market research.

The idea is a technical, instructional book on C5 Corvette performance enhancement. This book would be about 150 pages, 8.5x11-in in size, soft-bound and all-color.

Everything in the book would be aimed mostly at do-it-yourselfers interested in improving the performance of their street high-performance, street/track or street/strip 97-04 Vettes. The book would have little or no material on race-only cars.

Most mods in the book would be bolt-ons but some would not b, however, non-bolt-ons would be streetable and, for the most part, DIY tasks.

The book would limit itself almost entirely to engine, transmission, rear axle, suspension and brake subjects. There would be little or nothing on bodywork, paint, vehicle electronics other than chassis and powertrain, car care, interior enhancement other than for performance or appearance items.

I'm interested to know what kinds of modifications, parts or other coverage the C5 gearheads on the CAC would like to see covered in such a book. Please, confine your suggestions or comments to the above general guidelines.

TIA for any input you might have.

Please - Don't Go There

Lawsuits ..... ?? I don't believe you said that. First of all, if I changed my headlites on my car. And later, God forbid, I hit someone by accident. Do I hold the headlamp manufacturer responsible ?? In my 30 years of race car experience, no one has ever brought up the question of 'Lawsuits' .... that's the last thing anyone thinks about. I could possibly see a 'lawsuit' if a car was being towed to a racing event, and it fell off a trailer and caused property damage ..... It's VERY highly unlikely anyone could sue for applying information they would get from a book or magazine to their car. And, it would never stand up in court .... even if you had Johnny Concoran as your attorney .... Lol ! GO HIB ! ! !

I've read and reviewed Will's book here on the CAC. See http://corvetteactioncenter.com/rev...cmd=details&itemid=169&username=Hib+Halverson

The book being suggested here is different from Will's book in that it will not cover engines to the extent of Handzel's book and it will cover driveline, suspension, brakes and a few other itmes.

Knowing that would you still feel such a title would be redundant?

I never feel anything for a Corvette is redundant. For example see Corsa, Borla, B&B, SLP, GHL, Hooker, Flowmaster, etc. each with its own proponents and following. You'll have people reading Will's book and your's and still come up with a third opinion, method, process, etc. Write it...PLEASE. Thanks

BTW I replied on the homepage with my suggestions. Thanks

Hib, do it please, when I had my C4, the 101 projects book...was helpful to me, and a C5 book similiar would work for guys like me that can work on them...I'm not talented enuff for engine work, but many of us can do basics I think, like exhaust, air filter mods etc. Also I just bought my C5 Nov 1. There are always people moving up into them and need the resource!

Yes, please do the book.
Let us know when it's available!

Great idea.

I will definitely buy one. Issues to include are things like straightforward intake and exhaust mods, changing parts such as GM spark plugs and wires with other brands and types, tire features that enhance or degrade street-driving performance and why, and shocks, and more.

Identify parts such as fuel pumps that are recommended when a replacement is suddenly needed. In other words, when something like a fuel pump breaks, what brands and types are recommended and what the pros and cons are.

We will buy a book with that info to review and, then have on hand when those high-quality GM parts do what they do so well: squeak, grind, and break.

My advice is to price it so that it pays you to write it. Enough of us will purchase your valuable expertise.

A DVD is a nice gimmick, but would not be needed; it would be a good supplement.

Do it!

Hib,

You would be the ideal author/editor for a book of this type. Another suggested topic - performance A4s, shift kits, performance tranny builds, etc.

Lee

If you need a C5 to do research on for testing new shocks, wheels, tires, brakes, etc. I will be glad to help out. Just send me the parts and I will supply the labor and send you the test results and reports.

Hib, I assume you're addressing me. Will's book is already dated in some respects, but what I liked best about his book is the fact that he told it like it is and the engineering of the LS series was rather interesting. . He tells you you can't make a 427 out of a 355 unless you want leaks- I'm sure a lot of "tuners" didn't like that. There's always room for new info, as long as it's objective and not written like most mags, i.e., to plug some advertisers product, like airfoils.
Good luck in your endeavor.
Ken

How is Handzel's book "already dated"? Please be specific as the information might help the market research I'm doing.
