Please help.I am about to purchase a 96 CE Lt4.When I test drove it,the ABS light never flashed when starting the car.But the disable light for the traction control works when pushed. The car stops on a dime rolling at 30MPH and jamming on the brake,But no brake pedal pump.May there be a problem with the abs system? Can a blown/removed fuse cause this to happen?I forgot to check the fuse boxes for any blown/missing fuses. This was the only problem with the car I have found.Help! Thanks:confused

Welcome To The Corvette Action Center 354RwHpLT4CE!

I don't know the idiosyncracies of the '96 Corvette, but am I correct in my interpretation of what you say, in that when you turn the key to the "on" or "run" position, the ABS does not go through test cycle and the light does not illuminate? Does it illuminate while going through the check, but not remain illuminated while trying to start the car? In the latter case, don't expect it to remain lit while starting the vehicle - it doesn't. ;shrug

My ABS seems to be functioning fine in that although I have hit the binders pretty hard from high speeds, not once did they lock up on me. Yet I have never felt the pedal pulsation normally associated with ABS.

Are you experiencing braking difficulties? There are but a few basic checks one can perform on one's own; the ABS service is best left to a professional. ;)

With used Vettes about which the seller knows ABS is not working, a common sales ploy is to remove the Service ABS light bulb to avoid the cost of repairs.

Before I'd buy, I'd verify the condition of that bulb. If you find the bulb was removed, don't buy the car until the buld is replaced and proper operation of the ABS is verified.

check ABS

Find a gravel or dirt road (or even a dirty road) and with safe conditions - like no one behind you - jam on the brakes. You should see the light and feel it in the brake pedal.
It could be an innocent bad bulb or as the previous post warns, a malicious cover-up.
If you feel the ABS system working, replaciing the bulb is still a pita. Bargain the price or get the seller to fix.
If it doesn't work, watch out.

Thank you all for answering so quickly. To answer Ken,you were correct in your first statement. The "ABS" light never cycled through its test when the ignition was turned to "on".I will re-check the system on some dirt or wet surface to verify the system itself is working. The biggest problem is, I live in Memphis,Tn and the car is in Austin,TX.So Trying to not to forget all the things I had planned to check, after driving 9 hours to look at the car, was tough.I still have to go back down to Texas after the owner receives the title(which is in the mail)to actually purchase/retrieve the car!It will be worth it though! Thanks Again!I will post pics at a later date.
