Bell Housing Problem

While organizing parts to install my Keisler 5 speed i noticed that the hole in the center of my bell housing is too small to accept the Tremac 5 speed. Has anyone had this problem? Can i enlarge this hole or will that weaken the alluminum housing? I can drop another $350 on a lakewood but would rather spend the money elsewhere. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1963 Bellhousings were special -- as were the bearings and retainer on the 1963 muncies. Definitely wouldn't mess around with trying to enlarge the hole. You can get a 3858403 Bellhousing for about $75 from just about anywhere - the 403 was used for many years and readily available.

Brian,
Thanks for the help. I'm bidding on one now. Are the 63's worth more than the 403's?

Will i need a different fork or anything else?

I see you bid on the one ending the soonest! Be careful with anything old and aluminum. It would probably be a good idea to ask the seller about all the threads... also, if that clutch fork stud/pivot has never been out and is rusty, it might be a real bear to remove. It always makes me nervous when the description is the same length as the title.....

Don;t know about the '63 bellhousings. I'd guess and say that they would be more valuable than the 403 housings but not much because the demand isn't there.

Regards,
Brian
