Hey everyone, I just have a question, whats the stuff called that we're supposed to use to put on new gaskets when replacing the
timing cover gasket, water pump gasket, intake gasket, and oil pan, Thanks

The best stuff I've found is "Right Stuff"!!:thumb

:D

Typically, RTV silicone sealer is used, but you may not need to use it on all the gaskets listed. I'd use it on the pan gasket to "stick" it in place while you reinstall the pan and I'd use it on the intake gaskets, if they don't have silicone beads built into the gasket material. You may find that GM used RTV, alone, to seal the ends of the intake manifold to the block. With the timing cover and the water pump, you probably don't need RTV although it's sometimes useful in holding gaskets in place before the parts are reassembled.

Ordinary RTV can be found in many colors and at low prices at mass marketers.
Higher quality, products, typical of what's used in the trades, are available, too, but from other sources such as auto parts stores or vendors who sell direct to service shops.

I use RTV from Valco Cincinatti. Valco just introduced a new RTV product called "RTV Extreme" which duplicates the current RTV formula supplied to GM's engine plants.

Thanks Junk and Hib

I found something called Indian Head , comes in a small brown bottle. about 4 in high and 1 1/4 in dia.
It is much like the old permatex stuff but use a swab to put it on and is very sticky . I like to use that for sticking gaskets to waterpumps, valve covers , etc. DO NOT put it on the block this stuff dries rather hard and actually is a PIA to take off so I only use it on something I can get to with a grinder with a wire brush. The reason I like it is that if you let it dry for about 15 min or so the gasket stays put, unlike RTV which will let the gasket move. I use it more as a glue than as a sealer, gaskets alone most of the time will do their job. Any place where gasket movement is a problem when putting the part in place I like it. Intakes etc where gasket movement isn't a problem I will us the Right Stuff.

Umm yeah, I meant Hib an Junk ;shrug:)

Indian Head Shellac, I've used it for years, Be careful with RTV silicone, too much squeezees into the engine, A friend who worked at a local engine shop told me that a lot of failures are because of silicone ribbons in the oil passages.

What is sad,, it might not have hit bottom yet. ;LOL

I use Permatex High Tack Gasket Sealant / Sealer. It comes in a small tin can with a screw-on top w/ built-in applicator brush. It is burgundy in color and smells gooooooooooooooood.

It does not dry or get hard like the Indian Head sealer, and works very well on water pump gaskets, etc.
