C5 Painted Hood Liner

Here's a shot of a small winter project. Removed the hood liner, cleaned it then spray painted it with a high heat flat black enamel. After that I took to a local sign shop where they hand painted the embossed logo also with high heat enamel paints.

That's SWEET. That may be the way I go now that I'm replacing the hood liner on my 02 Vert.

Btw folks, the stick on emblems leave a LOT to be desired.

Anyone have an idea the time it would take for the paints to dry sufficiently?

I've thought of taking the supplies along the next time I have my Vette in for repairs, get Kevin to pull the liner, and me do it while they work on my car.

You know Jane Ann, that's a GREAT idea. Those paints don't dry very fast but I don't think that would be a big issue, you know?

Once the liner is installed again and it's under the hood with the engine running it will be warm so they will set up quickly. They are enamel so they don't dry REAL fast but they do dry.

I bet a half hour would be dandy.

Thanks. The only drawback I can think of would be washing the liner would not give enough drying time before applying the paint. I suppose this could be eliminated by:
1. washing the liner a day or two ahead of time
2. put it in the sun to dry before painting
3. can you say "leafblower" :L

Doing The Hood Liner

Jane Ann,

Don't wash the liner. I'm sure the moisture would compromise the molded shape of the liner not to mention the embossed logo design. Just use a shop vac with the soft brush attachment. Don't use an agressive brush of any kind because that will damage the surface. The material is actually fairly delicate.

As far as drying time for the paint...you'll want to give it 24 hours. I used a high heat flat black enamel. If you going to paint the logo you'll have to wait another 24 hour between coats. It actually takes several days from start to finish.

Removing the retainer buttons can be a little tricky. They don't want to come out easy and I used one of those large bar-b-que forks to get under them. If you break one of the button, don't worry. They can be bought at any car parts or body parts store and they're only like $3.00 for a box of six. Good luck and take you time. Easy for me to say since mine sits for six months during the winter.

I painted mine a few years ago with a can of regular black spray paint and some testers model paint. Looks as good today as it did two years ago after I painted it.

Dwayne...we all know what a superior photographer you are. Even though you've never learned how to size your photos properly. Your pictures require at least a 40" wide flat screen HDTV. But that said, I'll admit that this shot was done in hast, in my garage, in poor lighting. Believe my friend the hood liner is not dirty. Additionally, I've seen the hood liner on your ride. Let's just say the Missouri State EPA has your engine compartment designated as a "Super Fund" site.:L
