I finally jacked up the old girl to inspect the rearend. I found most everything in better shape than I expected. Two questins.....What is the best procedure to jack-up a Vette with a floor jack and stands? Second, I can't seem to fit the end of my grease gun onto the zirk fitting. There dosen't seem to be enough room between the yokes on the half shafts. Is there a special secrete vette tool I need for this?

I put the jack stands at the rear of the frame rail neat the kick up.

If you rotate the half shafts you can sometimes get a little better angle on them. NAPA has some different grease gun fittings. One of them worked for me on the one fitting that I couldn't get to with the fitting that came on the gun.

Precisely why I went to solid U-joints! No greasing needed!

I tried to modify the tip of the grease gun without luck.....I also tried raising the wheels and rotating them to change the angle between the yokes. Still couldn't get to them. Are solid u-joints the best option?

Try this...LINK

Thanks for the tip on the tip! I think I'll order one today....I don't know enough about the pros and cons of solid vs standard u-joints. What the difference?

I used to have a grease gun end ground down to fit. You have to not leave the wheels hanging and rotate till you can insert the end to the fitting. I don't have that problem anymore when I learned that non-greasable ujoints are far stronger because they are not hollow.

They are stronger. U-Joints typically don't need to be greased. If you have ever played with one, you will realize this quickly. The needle bearings are covered in grease, then capped with a stainless steel cap. The only way you would need to grease them is if you submurged your car and did a lap around the Great Lakes under water.
