Carter AFB leaking

Hello Folks,

I rebuilt the Carter AFB on my '63. It seems to perform well except when I turn the ignition off. After about a minute or so the nozzles in the primaries start dripping and continue to drip for about another minute. My question is, is it normal for this dripping of gas to occur? I replaced all gaskets and the accelerator pump.

Don't believe so, do you have the carb insulator in place between the carb & manifold? It's much the same as a gasket in appearance, only about 3/8" thick or so.
 
Yes, the carb insulator is there along with the manifold gasket and all the other new gaskets that came in the rebuild kit for my carb.

Mike[/QUOTE] lower the float level 1/16" to 1/8" from the setting listed in the carb repair kit spec sheet.
 
I agree. Your floats are too high, OR one or both of your floats have a pinhole and it is taking on fuel and allowing the bowl to overfill as the float sinks to the bottom of the well. More than likely, your floats are set too high. As a general rule of thumb, I try to set the floats almost dead level with the carb top inverted and the top gasket in place. This is usually good enough for most applications. Never adjust the floats in their seats. Always remove and adjust as the needle seats are matched and you don't want to groove them and create a leak. Good luck!!
 
My 2 cents... I think it could be either of the two problems described above. Fuel boiling from poor gasket insulation from manifold temp. or floats set too high. I would check both possibilities.

I had a similiar problem with the AFB I rebuilt in my 61. Turned out to be nothing more than a small bit of debris under the needle valve. The carb was so gummed up from sitting so many years that it was impossible to get completely clean even after soaking in cleaner for a full day. Doesn't take much to cause the valve to lose seat and drips to occur. It will only get worse and eventually the carb will flood when your out driving.
 
I rebuilt the carb about 6 months ago, paying particular attention to the needle valve to make sure it was clean. The carb wasn't too gummed up and needed only a few hours soaking to look like new. I haven't had it back off the car yet but I may just rebuild it again to check it out thoroughly to see what could be causing the dripping.
