CCM replacement question and WARNING!

Quick question for the DIY'ers out there...

It appears the central controll module on my 96 is dying. Has anyone replaced this? How much of the interior do you have to remove to get to it?

Also as warning, check your battery cables to make sure they are not rubbing against the steering shaft. My positive battery cable was not being held up by the clip on the brake booster and worn down. It sent voltage across the steering column and the ground wire frying it. Hopefully my bad luck can prevent someone else from having this problem.

CCM is not a DIY job, you need to have the dealer do it because all the info such as mileage and car features are stored in this. They need to transfer it from one CCM to the other.

Also if you were to swap it yourself, the Odometer would read 0miles and no features will be programmed in, once you drive over 100miles it locks and cannot be programmed.

CCM's I Think are around $150 for the part only.

Hmmm...Why can't you just remove the CCM, it's located just above the battery. Or am I thinking PCM. I think the 96 does have a CCM in the dash. Well I can't check it right now.Send it and a new one to Ed Wright or fastchips( who ever the guy is that most people use), and have them Reprogram it. Can those guys only do modified programming and not stock? That would be hard to believe. Going thru a dealership will cost you an arm and leg. Plus dealership will more than likely damage your vette in one way or another. That's always been my experience.

I planned on having the dealer reprogram it, but reprograming it is at best a couple of hours labor versus having them pull it all apart. As it is now, both lower passenger covers are off, the center console covers off, the steering wheel off (air bag), the instrument panel is out, so about the only thing left is the dash pad. Seems like I'm almost there.

The dealer is quoting $450 for the part so I am searching around.

yes you are thinking of the PCM, and I don't think Ed Wright or such will program CCMs..

To remove it.. on the driver side where the Carpeted side console meets the dash there is a trap door held closed with a screw, this will flap downward to let to see the Bracket that the CCM is bolted to, you will then have to remove that bracket to get it out

To remove the CCm, you need to remove the knee bolster on the driver's side and some carpeting from the trans tunnel. then you need to reach deep in and above the trans tunnel under the dash board to get it out....my 96 vert had a bad one too...you will see the SYS blinking on the LCD when the CCM is bad....that's the indicator for CCM or HVAC faults

Thanks for the input folks, you definitly have to be a contortionist to work on the inside of these cars! GMpartsdirect.com has it for about $300 with shipping so thats 150 off the local dealer, which will about cover the dealer reprograming.
