I'm trying to locate an under-the-hood and faint metallic chirping sound that only occurs on acceleration in my 1998 Auto Trans Coupe. At sustained speeds there is no noise.

My thinking is the belt tensioner might be the culprit but can't seem to pin it down. I don't know how many miles are on the tensioner since I bought my car used. Belts seem OK and are not worn.

Any thoughts would help.

Thanks.
Bill

The tensioners seem to be a common problem.

chirp

Before you go through the work and expense of changing out the tensioner, replace the belt with a Goodyear Gator belt which has a cross hatch design rather than a ribbed style that you might have now. I have found a number of times that this will eliminate the chirp.
