want to replace the stock air cleaner on 81 with a chrome edelbrock air cleaner and kn filter but what do you do with all the vacuum hoses going the stock cleaner, should they just be capped?

The vacuumline on the stock aircleaner goes to the temp controlled vacuumport that on its turn shuts off the valves in the air tubes to provide warm air for quick warm up of the engine. If you disconnect it the valves will always be open. As its a vacuumline you need to plug it to provent a lean mixture.

If you go with the edelbrock (w/o the airtubes / snorkels) the engine will suck in hot air from around the engine. Hot air means less air per sq ft so less fuel and less hp. In other words you go back into time. I only removed the charcoal ring inside the aircleaner put the kn filter in there and that is the best you will get. But of course that is only my opinnion. :)
