Is it just an urban legend or is there a "chip" that can be installed in the C5 computer that adds up to 50 hp? If there is such a thing, does it come from GM or is it strictly aftermarket? :confused

JJ, first off welcome to CAC, we're glad that you are here. Now to try and answer your question.

I'll start off by saying that I'm not an expert or even a mechanic, but I will say that I've never heard of such a thing. The ECM of C5's have "flash" memory where it can be reprogrammed for added power output. 50HP? No, I don't think so. I guess theoretically it could be possible, but the reliability of the engine would suffer, I would think.

Back in the earlier years of C4 Corvettes up through 93 (IIRC) the way to boost this type of performance, a chip would be reprogrammed and installed in place of the original.

I really think what you are asking about lies in that "urban legend" category.

there is a chip that can be added , it just doesn't go in the computer
If I remember correctly , it's a glorified resistor
they sell em on flea bay

bottom line , it is just a way to take your money

It's urban legend X2

1) C5 engine computers do not have removable "chips"
2) There is no computer program (removable or not) which can add 50 horsepower to a C5...or any Corvette with an engine computer for that matter.
