Coolant additives.

I've used Water Wetter. It works well. Some friends use 40 below and have had good results with it.

I also use Water Wetter (Red Line product). I have had good results with it. It's worth at least 10 degrees in my cars (early 70's Chevys).

I have not used 40 Below, have seen it but no opinion,

Rick

I don't think I found any improvement with "water wetter" but I think I'm out of the norm:cry

I've heard about water wetter for years and went to this pdf document to check it out:

http://www.redlineoil.com/whitePaper/17.pdf

One thing that concerned me was how WW with just water actually lowers the boiling point to 250° instead of the 265° you get with a 50/50 mix of water and glycol. So the tradeoff is that maybe your coolant will cool more quickly, but you'll also have a lower boiling point. I don't know about anyone else, but I'll stick with my good old 50/50 water/glycol to keep that extra 15° cushion, who knows when you'll need it. Also: "Sudden shutdown after very hard driving may cause boilover." Some of their claims are a real head-scratcher: "Doubles the wetting ability of water." Huh? "Reduces cylinder head temperatures." So does your cooling system if it's working properly. Sorry, but I'm not convinced that WW is all that effective, just my opinion, but read the link for yourself.

the biggest cause of overheating on older orignal rads is not the scale inside the rad tubes BUT the fact the pressed in fins between the tubes on the outside of the rad loses thermal contact and does not draw the heat from the tubes

Water wetting ability refers to the ability of the liquid to transfer heat. Sounds like double talk, I know, but that was the simple explination from and engineer.

Honestly, I just had a friend put WW in his 87. It seemed to get him back down to a better operating range, and when we heat cycled (20mph through town, then back to 45) his temps were in line with the 5 other vettes in the group. He had been living at the upper end previously.

Thanks for the feed back. My understanding is that WaterWetter works best with a higher percentage of water than antifreeze. I do not know if that also goes for 40 Below. :)

I used it in the 84 I had and it made about a 20 degree difference... which made me feel comfortable using the air condition in the hot Arizona weather... That was 40 below that is... not WW.

:) I used Water Wetter in my 96. But I was thinking of trying 40 Below in the Z. Thanks for your input. Where did you get the 40 Below?

I use WW and it drops the temps down faster when I get going from a stop. It hasn't caused me any problems so far.
