Id like to ask a question about a 1989 coupe. Im sorta confused about how the fan system works. Mine kicks on at about 228 and shuts off at about 218. I understand that is the correct set up for stock. Question I have is .....I know I can buy a chip to turn on fans earlier......but sorta expensive as that is the only thing I want to change...Does the vette have a temp switch that I can buy to turn on the fan earlier...I have just the one fan.
And if so is the way it works...does the fan switch trick the computer into thinking the engine temp is 228 when it is only 200 and then turn on the fan or am I way off on this one.......is the switch on the drivers side bank on the intake and if so where can I get one. Assuming the system works like I think it does...............Thanks for any respponses..........Lou

thanks ken for your response,,,,,but im still confused even after reading all the posts.....maybe its because their are so many changes in different years.................

my 89 with one fan only and a 180 degree stat from reading i think my fan is controlled only by the computer and the ONLY way to get it to come on sooner is to buy a chip....is that correct....

if so i think that keeping the factory 180 degree stat is the best way to go....

i also think that gm made the fan come on at 228 and off at 218 for emissions only.....

i think that the proper time to have the fan come on in my setup would be 210 and off at 200....that would satisfy both winter and summer needs and work well with my 180 stat....i would think gm might have wanted it this way....what does every body think.....is this correct..........thanks for everyones help and happy holidays.......sure would like some input on this from anyone.....

The easist and cheapest way to turn your fan on at 210 is to buy and install a manual fan switch. When you hit 210 just turn it on. If you forget the computer will still turn it on at 228. Mid America sells one for $12.99

On my 85 I had the same stock set up and hated it, especially down here in So. FL. They make a manual set up (Ecklers, etc) that will allow you to manually turn on the fan. I opted for the chip which allows the ECM to turn on the fan at 174 degrees. These are the only two practical approaches I am aware of. Not to forget, I run a 160 degree stat.

Are you sure you have only one fan? I thought most models used a Primary and Secondary after 1988. Do you have one relay located on the fan shroud? The override switch is one way to activate your fan early or you could look into using a thermister with a normally open contact and a seperate relay which means more parts to go wrong. Paul

yes one fan and no relay on shroud.........so is the fan only controlled by the computer......not a switch on the block.....
if so then that means to me that a sending unit on the block sends a signal to the computer which then displays the reading on the didgital dash and that same reading is what the computer goes by to turn on the fan...is that correct....if so i guess i need a chip....and does on at 210 and off at 200 sound right with a 180 stat.....its cold here now and the temp of engine seems to stay around 200 205.......dont think i would want the fan on sooner than that and the difference between on and off seems to be 10 degrees........thanks lou

U can buy an adjustable thermostat and wire it into the relay. These have adjustments for both cut-on and cut-off.
I use these on Gensets where cooling and constant temp are critical.
