looking for a 85
Looked around on the interenet and didn't really find what the purpose of a temp sensor is, I know it has something to do with

cooling but what else does it do?

It informs the operator.

More importantly, it "talks" to the car's "computer". If the coolant is cold, the "computer" will increase the engine's rpm and the fuel air ratio. If the coolant is too hot, the computer will turn the fans on or increase their speed.

Low coolant can also have some interesting effects.

thanx! am wondering if it can affect idle as in a semi uneven idle, BTW Im just learning about these cars and thanx for the info.

A "semi-uneven" idle can be caused by a dirty throttle body and/or weak injectors.

Find a bottle (can) of BG 44 K and put that in your gas tank. 44K will clean the fuel system and injectors - if they ain't too dirty.
Get a throttle body spray cleaner and follow the instructions paying attention to the Idle Air Circuit portion.

To test/clean the injectors properly, you may need to pull them.
