Hello,

I am looking for help to decode the following SBC.

Block Casting # 3914678
Head Castings # 3917291
Crank Casting # 3911001

Front Pad reads V0617HH
781151984

Pass Side above frost plug,
A44667
78N

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill.B

Head is for small block chev casting #3917291 used in 1968-69 327-350 and
1967-70 302-327 1.94 / 1.5 valves and Camel hump, no accessory holes

Thank you for your reply. I am curious about the HH suffix as well as the date casting. Any thoughts?

Bill

I do not know. A friend of mine has had it in his garage for years. It is a standard bore short block missing the timing chain cover and oil pan. The heads are removed and the intake, carb and distributor are missing as well. I understand that V0617 is Flint, June 16. Does the # 781151984 look like a partial or full VIN for a Corvette application?

Thanks,

Bill

Mike ,

Thanks. I do not know Corvette VIN #'s. Does the 781151984 stamped close to the V0617HH look like a partial or full Corvette VIN?

Thanks,

Bill

I think it should be 78L151984...this would make it a 1968 camaro vin.

Jim

1 2 4 3 7 8 L 1 5 1 9 8 4 for a coupe or 1 2 4 6 7 8 L 1 5 1 9 8 4 for a ragtop. Both 68 Camaro vins.....actually there goes that theory...68 camaros had the last 6 starting at 300001...67 started at 100001. You sure on that partial vin???

Fun...yes...but its bedtime. Will check more tomorrow.

Jim,

Thanks for you help. I will have to investigate the partial VIN further. I agree that it looks to be Camaro, however Camaro's did not use the HH suffix. You are right that the 68 Camaro's started at 300001. It looks more like a 67 Camaro VIN #. I do not have a use for the block myself, but I would like to find the correct car for the block so we may re-unite the owner of the Camaro or Corvette with the correct engine.

Thanks,

Bill

Maybe ask over in the C2 section? I don't know midyear VIN codes at all.

That block was used for large-journal 327's ('68 only) and for 350's from '68-'79; the crank says it's a 327. The VIN derivative says it was originally installed in a '68 Acadian (Canadian Pontiac) built at the Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant. The 291 heads came in both 1.94/1.5 and 2.02/1.6 valve sizes; no way to tell which ones you have unless you pull the heads and measure the valves.

John.

Thanks for that reply. I will search for some more info on a Nova wesite. Do you recommend any sites on Nova or Acadian?

Thanks again,

Bill.B

hi all,
according to MorTec, the block is 1968 302(Z28), 327, 350 2 bolt main; heads 64cc chamber. Heads should be 1.94 intake valves
According to yearone, the HH designation was for 1968 Impala 327 250 HP 4bbl 8.75:1 compression ratio
Hope this helps.

The fact that it was originally installed in an Acadian doesn't make the engine any different than if it was installed in a Nova, Camaro, or Caprice; they're all the same application as far as the engine is concerned.
