I checked the MSRP price shown on the Build Number of my car and several others. The site uses $15,598.52 as the "MANUFACTURERS SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE OF THIS MODEL INCLUDING DEALER PREPARATION." The actual window sticker for my car shows this number as $16,258.52. Either there was a price increase of $660.00 sometime during the production run, or the Bowling Green cars were priced higher than the St. Louis ones.

The Corvette Black Book lists $16,258.52. It's possible the $15K figure could have been an early estimate of what the base would be. I am not aware of a different base price for the Bowling Green models. Bowling Green did not open until June, 1981. The majority of 1981 Corvettes had already been produced by that time.

I only mention it because the L81 Registry is using the incorrect dollar figure on their sticker pricings . . .

Someone needs to fix it.

My actual dealer invoice shows: $15,598.52 as the base price for my January 20, 1981 St. Louis build.

I believe if you look closely at your Window Sticker you will find near the upper right side the true MSRP..:

FACTORY BUILD SHEET: $12,598.52

Dealer Mark Up: $3,070.00
Dealer MSRP: $15,598.52
Options Subtotal: $000.00
Add on Destination Charges: $462.00 (Delivery to Detroit, MI)

Total MSRP minus individual cars options.... (Build Sheet) .. $ 12,528.52
Dealer Mark Up ... $3,070.00
The actual options listed on the Build Sheet for a 1981 Corvette are shown at factory cost, and are lower than listed on the Window Sticker.

Dealer Mark Up plus Factory base price True MSRP minus Options of the 1981 Corvette is $15,598.52.

I have gone into more detail below and used my 1981 as a reference ;) This information is provided from the "Original Window Sticker and Factory Build Sheet" from my 1981!!

Destination Fee .... Price Depend upon Zone and Dealership

In my case OPTIONS are:
Rear Window Defog: $109.00
Alum Wheels: $404.00
225/70r-15 raise white letters: $67.00
Radio Delete: CREDIT. - $118.00

(+)Total Options for RARE81 = $462.00
(+)Destinations Charger = $342.00
(+)MSRP (Includes Dealer Mark Up $3,070.00) = $15,598.52

(=)TOTAL COST ON DEALER LOT/SHOWROOM = $16, 402.52
This figure is correct for MY 1981 with the Options it came with. Just about every 1981 has different options and the PRICE will vary on individual OPTIONS making the Total Out the Door Price unique..

Hope this makes sense and everyone can figure it out..

I see 1YY87 Option (Base Corvette Sport Coupe) shows a list price of $16,258.52 I do not see any reference to MSRP nor have I found any supportive documentation to validate this dollar finger.

Mike Antonick is correct more times than not. Without knowing how he came to this figure I will stand behind the numbers I have provided here and at the L81VetteRegisty, I can document by providing hard copy reference and ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION of my numbers and findings I have provided.

The Registry has worked with Mike to Document a PRIMER 1981... NUT and the Registry provided unique documentation to support this claim, as well as to the State of Maryland.. The Registry is doing it's very best to keep our data base alive, operational and accurate! Hopefully we can keep our site alive and well..

Until otherwise convinced, the figures at the L81VetteRegistry remain as they are..

Thank you for you diligent concern and interest in our passion.

I have the window sticker in my hand for my Bowling Green produced car delivered in California. Below the Standard items at no extra charge is the "Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of this model including Dealer Preparation at $16,258.52. Optional equipment is then listed below and finally a Destination Charge of $349.00 is added to arrive at the Total amount. I will be happy to fax a copy of my Window Sticker.

To be sure we are talking about the same thing, note the MSRP is located just below the box that says "THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE STANDARD THIS MODEL AT NO CHARGE UNLESS REPLACED BY OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT.

Just below the list of standard options is very thin box with the wording of:
MANUFACTURER'S SUGGESTED RETAIL PRICE OF THIS MODEL INCLUDING DEALER PREPARATION.. then a figure

Below this is the Options on your car i.e. as outlined above...

Do you have the factory build sheet??

I have my Original Dealer Window sticker and the build sheet. The Window sticker is too wide for my scanner, so I scanned the side with the MSRP. I believe Bowling Green Corvettes experienced a price increase. Here are my details:scan0002.jpg

...FACTORY BUILD SHEET: $12,598.52...

The $12K figure comes from the copy of the dealer invoice you have; not a build sheet.

Looks to me like California cars with the 305 and computer may have cost more than regular production 81s.

Could it be the price of the 1981 Corvette Changed "MSRP" from the beginning at St. Louis to the build at Bowling Green...

I need to investigate more Bowling Green built units before I have the MSRP changed for those built at Bowling Green, it does appear that there was a price adjustment between units built at St. Louis verse's those built at Bowling Green.

I would also like to see a few California Cars with the CAL EMISS on them verse's the other 49 states, to see if that effected the MRSP...

I am sorry for this confusion but must leave the data base alone for now. The data base was constructed by a former 1981 owner, and to date I have not figured it out, so regardless of outcome it may have to stay the same.

The detail is significant, but not enough to warrant a complete redesign the Registry or cause deletion of the current data base..

We seem to have a $660.00 inconsistency between your Window Sticker and My Window Sticker... Hopefully we can get this all ironed out and changes made if necessary.

Thanks

Bud

Sounds fair enough to me! Thanks!

I am not a computer person, matter of fact I Hate 'em... I would gladly hand over the Registry Website to someone that is computer savvy enough to keep it current and make changes to enhance the site, at this point I would be willing to sign over all the ownership and payments for the site to someone that would keep it free and not exploit it....

I thought I have seen the price differences for new registrations, not sure but seems to me the latest approvals from Bowling Green Plant showed up as the $18k+ and not the $16K for the St. Louis built 1981's...]

Thanks for asking, but not much progress ...

NOTE: I clicked on the link You provided in post #11 and the MSRP is the $16k number ;shrug Link
