I'm just wondering if anyone has done this themself...

How are the results compared to a professional (TPIS) job?

I guarantee you're going to hear from a few experts here Edmond; many have done this themselves with excellent results. However, I am not among those honored to have the experience.

I'm pretty sure Brian (Scorp508) and Grumpyvette have experience, but I haven't seen 'em around in a while. Maybe -=Jeff=- has performed this function, or Chris. :confused

Good luck, you can do it. Just read up on it first. ;)

You can but it is labor intensive. If you pay your self by the hour it is cheaper to have it done however it is gratifying to see your handy work as the ports go from factory rough to handmade smooth and shinny.

I always do my own on the motorcycles and send the ones for the cars out. Maybe the sight of eight gaping holes scares me.;shrug

If you have the time, go for it.

Heads

As I said in a previous thread, just putting intake gasket in place, mark w/dykem and remove any and all material that is into the port area made a noticable difference on my 79 L-48. I then went to 1969 350 HP .202 heads and those ports were opened already when I checked the gasket against them. I don't know if thats factory or the previous owners ported them , but they made a bigger deference . The heads had hardener seats for the non lead fuel. I'm sure there's better out there now, but at the time it was an inexpensive up grade. Just detailing that part of the motor no one sees.

Nope I did not port them myself, I got a set of CNC L98 Heads from a guy who had sent them to CNC Cylinder Heads in Pinellas Park FL.

I would have them done on a CNC Machine by , CNC Heads, TPiS or LPE.
