If I wanted to change the crossfire system to a (regular) System on my 82. What problems would I run into.? What problems with thecomputer ? What do you recommend replacing it with?

The cross fire is a good system for what it was designed for---crusing on the highway. Small block, 4 speed overdrive automatic, tall gears, big tires, and A/C. Think twice before you throw it away.

Not to mention

It will NEVER pass smog inspection!

don't devorce your cross-fire"its cheaper to keep'er

in all honesty theres nothingatall wrong with cross-fire injection , only most mechanics havent a clue of how tune them. the 82 wasmy favorite year of the c-3 but if u wantsome ideas i could give u some of the mods i did to my previous 84' z-51 c-4 coupe!
and believe me it would weld the doors on a stock 85-87 tune-port c-4. 160 thermostat, (2) K&N air filters, new fuel filter,
accel super coil, a/c delco rapid fire spark plugs( be sure not to gap them, because this particular plug comes from GM already set
with a different gap from normal specs. A.D.S. stage2 chip,
either flowmaster (corvette mufflers) or hooker aero chamber
mufflers . if u dont get th chip advance the initial timming +2 degrees and install the super coil, fuel filter K&N air filter,
rapid fire plugs and the 160 degree thermostat u'll feel and hear the difference. u can find the chip under www.ads performance chip.com. i also recommend shift kitting the 700R-4 overdrive trans
with either the B&M shift improver kit runs about 25.00
or transgo high performance kit. whether u shift kit the trans or not though ; when u fill it back up , use Type F (ford fluid) instead of dexron 3, and substitute 1 quart of B&M trickshift fluid.
the fype f fluid withstands higher temperature than the dexron
and gives a firmer shift with out so much of a glide through the gears on stock 700 r-4's. but with the kit and the fluid ; the car will perform night and day,and willstill make a dependable everyday driver without sacrificing drivability . . theres a shop down here in georgia called corvette country in fayetteville
theres a guy there name john and he swears that a cross-fire
set properly willout perform a carburated vet easily with the same mods, and i didnt believe him till i tweaked minebut i went one step further with a comp cam ( compcams have a grind especially for cross fire and it doesnt affect drivability, but gives it a slight noticable idle but still smooth. but mine would turn
5400 to 5800 ez. the biggest problem with the cross fire is that the intake runnerson the intake are narrow and restricted not really equal to the intake port of the head.thats y they're low end torque monsters

There is nothing basically wrong with the crossfire if it is set up properly and looked after. I had an early Z28 Camaro with it, it never missed a beat and was just quick enough not to get embarrassed to often at the stop lights.

There is a guy at our local track with an 84 that has run low 12`s all season and he still has the CFI on it so it can`t be that bad.

blacktop hit the nail on the head...the crossfire setup is pretty unique, most mechanics just don't know how to work on it. This is my second and they've both been very reliable. Now if you're looking for a 400hp beast...then the CFI ain't gonna do it.

JHL, a low 12's crossfire? I'd sure like to know what he's done to it! (a little "juice" maybe?)

And I have to say that it's so nice to hear some positive comments about the crossfire. On certain "other" forums you just mention crossfire and it's just one negative slam after another, from people that know nothing about it. Very annoying.

Hmmmm.

What about running two Holley Pro-Jection units on a modified Crossfire manifold with shortened runners to compensate for a larger throttle body?

Or side draft EFI built onto the lower TPI manifold? Wouldn't be too hard would it? One MAP sensor and Four throttle bodies.....
Tuning would be really interesting trying to get all of the TPSs in sync. Kinda like a Hilborn system. Maybe a chip thats calibrated to read four TPSs and four IACs wired in a series. I bet it sure would run though!

Hmmmm

i got crossfire on my 82 Z/28 indy pace car rep. i got to say i heard alot of negativity towards that setup. for me though i got to say this. it is very strong and tuned right can run real good! i bumped the pressure to 12lbs instead of the stock 6lbs. i can't remember the #'s it's been along time since i've messed with it but that sounds about right. i got to relook it up but i do remember the fuel pressure being really low on these setups. i don't know the differences between the Z and a vette but it can't be too different. you can do alot to these manifolds a good port and polish and the same on the rochester throttle bodies with a 1/2 inch spacer plate works wonders for low end torque. with alittle head work (1.88 intake valve) and some polishing with a new cam tuned thru a snapon scanner 3000 i had the 305 ci with a 3:42 rear gear with a 200 metric 3 speed tranny running 13.5's no problem. you can step up the injectors from bosch. i wish i could remember all the specs to help you out. i'll have to dig up the paperwork i got on it. the car is currently waiting for restoration when i get the time this winter to start pulling her apart. i'm gonna use the crossfire injection and put a 383 stroker with nitrous throttle plates. Paxton used to make a supercharger kit for crossfire injected cars. anyone ever seen it? maybe i can find it again in my stack of hotrodder mags and scan it. 1 thing that kept throwing a code that had me baffled was a vacuum line going to the throttle bodies themselves kept coming off the nipple. alittle vasaline on the nipple then slip it back on and never had that code again. you can tell cause the idle is really high (above 1800rpm) just in case it don't slip a code out.

i remember looking at another crossfire Z and pulling the computers out mine was alot bigger. i was told that the indy reps had the vette computer in it setup for the 350 if this is true or not i don't know. All in all though i like the setup very unique and keeps the identity of the car intact even if you gut the motor and rebuild it. I'm hoping i can squeeze 500 hp out of the 383 stroker after my uncle tweeks on it with that setup.

on the other hand go to a junk yard and get a tuned port setup and order the harness and don't forget to grab the computer! and you'll be good as gold for emissions. edlebrock holley and a few others makes tune port kits for carburated motors such as what you want to do maybe this is easier and cheaper but by all means don't sell or junk the crossfire for it holds more value to the car.

The crossfire can be made to run pretty good, especially if you dont have to pass really strict emission testing. The Offenhauser or SY-1 smokey ram may be something for you. On http://www.crossfire.homeip.net there are members doing these setups (and one has a supercharged CFI and is converting to the offenhauser). The guy running the smokey ram also bores TB's to large oversizes at a very good price.

There are flow numbers on the site and the X-ram doesn't really flow a lot more than a moderately ported & prepped stock intake. There's also some X-ram units for sale over there.
