Custom Muffler?

Next week we are supposed to have 40 to 45 deg. That makes for bareable working conditions in the garage. First thing that is going to happen is the saws all is going to take the muffler off of one side. Slip a pipe on in it's place just out the back and see what it sounds like. My cats are all in place so I should get a good idea how bad-good it will be. Will post in this thread no later then Tuesday evening about 8 pm central time. :D If I like what I hear I will make some 304 stainless tubes and tips for both sides. I work in manufacturing as a machinest and have any equipment I need.:) If anyone is intrested the company website is http://www.lvomfg.com

what is the easiest way to post a link ?

I will be the Increased Sound project next week myself. My local muffler shop recommended cutting off the mufflers and putting on straight pipes and listen to see if that is what I want or if it needs to be toned down. If it is okay, we will weld the original LT1 tips back on and go. If it is too loud, we will start by testing several glass pack style mufflers but not Flowmasters. His opinion is that Flowmasters are big echo chambers that transmit too much resonance up into the car. Glass packs direct that sound out the back.

Is he right? I'll let you know in a week or so.

I had the muffler shop who installed the Flowmasters make the LT1 Brushed SS tips on my post above. It's too bad someone has not come up with a solution to reduce the resonance on Flowmasters once installed. I still am considering taking them off and putting back the stock mufflers.

Interesting. When I told my local guy that I wasn't going to go with the Flowmasters, he seemed a bit surprised, and a bit peeved. But the respons I am getting here is overwhelmingly NOT to install Flowmasters, for what I am looking for.

I am staying with stock right now, especially since other repairs have dented my budget!

OK I did it ,, took the saws all to the vette.. the muffler that is. :D I have all three cats on my 90 so I didn't think it would be to loud and I was right. I cut only one off to try it and it is quite mellow with just a little bit of back rap . The engine isn't running all that good, need to get it on a scanner and find what it is. I believe the mixture is a bit rich and causing the back rap.I plan on making a pair of tips with 304 stainless and polish them. I will take pictures and post when I get them done. :)

If you've removed the cats, put a Magnaflow Tru-X muffler in place of the main cat..resonance will be a non-issue.

I can vouch!

Definately the true x crossover and magnaflows. AdvancedAutoCC put that set up on my 87 coupe. Sounds great and has no resonance!

Glad you like it! That's the setup I use myself. You made an excellent choice! ;)

I might add I used a Tru-X crossover rather than a Tru-X muffler that I recommended in the earlier post. The muffler is a dual in, dual out model with a Tru-X perforated core, rather than just a crossover.

Now where are the pics, sound clips at? :D
