I have heard about the dexcool product however do not know much about it. Is it required for my 87 ? Thanks For your help. Dewayne

There was a thread here awhile back concerning the pro's and con's of using the orange stuff....I tried it and lost my radiator. Went back to green and have not had a problem.

My 2 cents, if your car came with the green stuff from the factory, then stick with the green stuff. I think that was used in the last couple C4's.

I would not use Dexcool® in a vehicle that did not come from the factory with Dexcool® in the cooling system. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to flush out all the conventional anti-freeze coolant from the cooling system of an older vehicle, and any conventional anti-freeze would contaminate the Dexcool®.

I guess you don't have to worry about cross-contamination if you start with a fresh, new system like I did. I'm using Dexcool®. :D

_ken :w

I switched my 86 over to Dexcool 5 years ago after thoroughly flushing the cooling system. I have had zero problems with it.

I run what my car came with... if you've got a late model 95 or newer, stick with the Dex-cool, anything else gets the green stuff. Even on Dex-cool I wouldn't go 5 years without a coolant change. :eek

I use GM/Texaco "DexCool" in all my vehicles in which I run antifreeze.

Two of them, the 01 Camaro and the 99 Blazer, came with it from the factory, however, the Camaro has had it's percentage of DexCool reduced from 50/50 to 20/80. The Blazer is still 50/50 because it's the only vehicle I own that ever sees really cold weather.

I also replaced traditional antifreeze in my ZR-1 and my 65 Malibu with 20% mixes of Dexcool and water.

When you change a car over from traditional antifreeze to DexCool, you need to flush the system, run a mix of DexCool about a 1000 miles then drain it and put a fresh mix of DexCool in the engine.

The good thing about DexCool is it uses a calcium based corrosion inhibiter formula which is more long-lasting and more friendly to cooling system parts.
