LT4 1996 C4, Cosidering purchasing on e-bay or whatever a diagonist meter of sorts what type do i need im looking to spend way less than $100, with that said, beside finding problems with eng etc can a meter at that price be used later to help improve preformace.
So what type of meter is needed

Hi captainrags:

You must mean Diagnostic Meters.

It's more than meters with Corvettes from 84 and on. Those cars have sssooo many relays upon relays. I've got tons of Diagnostic Equipment for these and worth every penny when it comes down to finding the problem without being a "test by replacing" type of mechanic.

Usually when somebody says "way less than $100.00" that may mean south of $60.00. I can't think of anything that would help with what you're looking for in that price range.

By the way, those LT4's are FAST cars that Chevrolet downplayed because of the introduction to the '97 C5. I owned an LT4 and had a blast with it! Took it trade toward a new '02 C5. Didn't like the C4 teal color!

Diagnostics and tuning require two different pieces of equipment
A OBDII " meter" will let you see engine codes and diagnose faults
For tuning ( performance) you need LT1 tuning software , a special cable and a laptop

For less than 100, you are looking at nothing more than a basic code reader that supports generic OBDII functions and will give you some real time data. Useful in diagnostics, but has limited capabilities. If you do not already have one, I suggest a Field Service Manual be the first priority.

Keep in mind like anything else a Diagnostic Tool is just that, a tool, it DOES NOT tell you what is wrong, it just gives you a direction. Sometimes that direction is totally wrong. Got to be smarter than the tool. :upthumbs
