I just purchased an 89 Vette and changed all the fluids like you the forum recommended but the mechanic at the garage did not change the differential fluid because he said it still looked like honey and he would be ripping me off if he changed it. My car has 97,000 mi. on it. What do you think? Thanks

Sounds like you may have an honest mechanic! Alot of mechanics will perform services that aren't really needed and hit you with a big bill. Does it seem to be a reputable shop?
It's also possible the previous owner, like most vette owners, took real good care of the car mechanically.
Anyway, congrats on the car!

I agree!

send some more work his way and see if your satisfied. If he really is an honest mechanic pat yourself on the back for finding the rarest breed of mechanic and don't ever let him go!

sounds like you purchased a well maintained '89. congats :upthumbs

He's a good mechanic. Whether it's a good move depends on your financial situation.

If he's saving you $30-40 and that's a lot of money for you then it's a good thing. If $30-40 isn't gonna break the bank then I'd change it anyway.

When I buy a car, unless I know when a fluid has been changed, I change it regardless of condition, so I know how old it is and when to change it the next time.

The cost of a differntial fluid change is not a whole lot and at close to 100K miles, it probably is a good idea anyway just for peace of mind. Make sure you add two bottles of GM Positraction Additive with the fluid change. You can go to a synthetic gear oil if you like, but you still need the additive.

The mark of a good tech and a repair shop is having them tell you that a specific service is not necessary when they check. The shop where I work does this and they go so far as to give customers a time line as to when certain services may be needed and it's even printed out on the invoice as a reminder.

Just make sure he puts the Limited Slip additive in with it. I would go ahead and do it, if you can foot the money. It will be out of the way for a while.
