Ok, Ive researched all the vats threads and need to know conclusively, if installing the bypass will work.

1. my security system arms..light goes solid
2. wth the system armed ,window down , unlocking door, from outside, opening door, will sound horn.
3. trying to start the car when armed ..will sound horn.
4. unarmed, open door security light flashes..place key in ignitionturn ..light goes solid.. wait for 3 to 4 minutes with key always in ignition. the system has had time to reset. turn key security light is out and it fires up.
5. key measure's ohm's for a code 14 on gm vats scale
6. cleaned area around column insert and key detents for grime that might impead reading.
7. will installing vats security bypass, keep me from having to wait 4 minutes for timeout sequence or is there something else afoot. ??? thanx cac for all the info on previous posts.

VATS bypass

It's really easy to try. And easy to put it back like it was. Get some resistors from Radio Shack that match your key's resistance and plug them into the VATS connector at the bottom of the column. If the bypass works, look further up the column for the source (up the collumn to the key). If you have two keys, look there next (do they match and perform the same?) If the bypass doesn't work, look toward the ECM.
I used foam ear plugs to clean my ignition key hole. Worked very well.
Hope this helps.

its at the bottom of the steering column?..on your back upside down kind of thing....

Vats bypass or defeat

One of these threads mentions taking out the 'bolster' which I think is the padding under the driver's side instrument panel. One entry mentions the two wire plug and color code of the leads. There was a thread that had an actual photograph but I couldn't relocate it. This list of threads will give you several leads including key resistance values. It's a lot of reading but informative.

If you have an airbag in the steering wheel, don't mess with that connector (it's usually a yellow connector), and it's a good idea to disconnect the battery for several minutes before doing any wiring checks. A Helms manual really helps (they're year specific).
Good luck
