Doug Moe: A Corvette's memorable half century
DOUG MOE | Wisconsin State Journal
He can still tell you where and when he first laid eyes on the car. It was Feb. 25, 1963, a Monday, in the basement of the Chevy dealership in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The dealer had told Steve Stone he couldn’t have it until Wednesday — there was some paperwork and sprucing up to be done — but Stone, who was 18, went over anyway just to sit in it and read the owner’s manual.
Stone was not the first teenager to fall hopelessly in love with a Corvette convertible — 1963 was the first year of the Sting Ray model — but he may be the only one to have hung onto, and still be driving, the same one he purchased half a century ago.
I found Stone, 69, on a recent afternoon, sitting in a lawn chair outside the home near Hilldale he shares with his wife, Marilyn. The Corvette, a shiny black, was in the driveway, and someone walking by had just stopped to have a look and hear the story. It happens all the time. As long as Stone has his car, he will never want for conversation.
