this could not be the correct name for the part that is what he told me it was called he said its a few inches long and splined on each end

This is my thought. Nevermind Oooops I forgot 94 has the opti.. I'll have to look further..

Doesn't the front of the camshaft protrude out the cover plate and into the Optispark? Since he said it broke off, I can guess that he meant a shear pin of some kind. Did he give you or show you broken parts?

I know my 95 opti is driven by a little dowel pin on the front of the cam. I believe that the earlier opti may be driven the same way. Check out these pics to see a late model opti drive pin. (Not my car not my site, not my pics) Look to the right of the radiator hose you will see the pinhttp://www.zmydust.com/images/headsandcam/
If the pin is sheared off it may be a good time for a hotcam or better!

Part Name

I checked my GM service manual and my Chilton the best I can come up with is that the part in question is called a camshaft sprocket pin. The Chilton manual seems a little easier to understand. I found the info in 2-14 Engine Electrical section.

It says

Install the distributor assembly into position with the driveshaft in the end of the camshaft. Rotate the distributor coupling until the camshaft sprocket pin slot aligns with the camshaft sprocket pin. Slide the distributor onto the end of the camshaft until fully seated on the engine front cover.

It sounds to me as if the pin is on the opti and goes into a slot on the end of the camshaft (Just a guess):confused
