ECM Replacement

I'm 95% sure I have to replace my ECM on a 1989 vette - Should I spent the extra money for an AC Delco ECM ?? AC Delco is about $114 and a Cardone is about $72.00 (both are remans and core charges above $100)

which one has the best warranty?


i believe gm parts are 12/12
 
In my experience, go with GM with electrical and computer parts.

Are you talking about the Chip or the complete module? If it is just the chip now is the time to have a custom one burnt for your Vette.:w
 
I was just told that I HAD to replace my ECM. The mechanic (a very nice guy) followed the flow chart 2 times to diagnose a code 42. It came down to ECM failure.

I was going to go to Mid America and get a new ECM. I happened to be in Advanced Auto parts and mentioned that I was going to get a new ECM. The guy said they had them too and for less than Mid America. Plus they have only a penny core charge!!!!! So I could afford to keep my old ECM. I asked IF....IF I still had a code 42 with a new (remanuactured) ECM could I bring it back. He said sure.

I got my money back.....still have a code. Now I know better where to look to solve it.

1) What was the manufacturer of the ECM ??

2) Are you sure the core charge was a penny (.01)

3) You purchased it at Advanced Auto Parts
 
code 42

1. confirms code 42 and that the fault causing the code is present

2. checks for a normal EST ground path through the ignition module. an EST CKT 423 shorted to ground will also read less than 300 ohms; however this will be checked later

3. as the test light voltage touches terminal 10 the module sould switch causing the ohmmeter to overrange if the meter is in the 1000-2000 ohms position selecting the 10-20,000 ohms position will indicate above 5000 ohms the important thing is that the module switched

4. the module did not switch and this step checdks for
EST CKT 423 shorted to ground.
Bypass CKT 424 open
faulty ignition module connection or module
5. confirms that code 42 is a faulty ecm and not an intermittent in CKT 423 or 424

in basic terms check the ign module and connectors
they always melt or break,

The ignition module was the first thing that went out on my '89. More than likely that's your problem. Much less expensive and eiaser to replace than an ECM. Let's hope so, a shorted or grounded wire in a harness is a pain......if the coil and ignition mod is original might as well replace both....they have 15 years of run time on em......good luck with it....

I am not sure what the manufacturer of the ECM was....the guy told me that there is only ONE manufacturer....??? I belive that the name started with a "C".

Yes, it was just a penny. The clerk could hardly believe it....he said that there must be a million of them out there to be that cheap on core charge.

Yes, I did purchase it at Advanced Auto parts. Urbana, IL.
 
Just had my ECM replaced with genuine GM parts.. 12/12 warranty...... My vette is a 93, the part was 236, and labor was 90 bucks.... seems like the car is running better... Let me ask a stupid question, can the ECM affect car performance and how so?
