I need to make a choke adjustment...getting to much choke as I had to hold the choke plate open to keep the engine running upon cold start-up. Soooo I thought....why not just remove the entire choke.....:bash Bad idea....forgot that I would lose the high speed idle cam in doing this.

So now I am trying to figure out just how the two levers go back. Should have paid more attention :Wwhen I took it off. I'll figure it out this week.

Just thought I would confess.....

I remember the first time I disassembled a Quadrajet (I know this isn't your first time). I was all into completely tearing it down and getting it really clean. Then when it was time to get it back together, all the little peices of the divorced choke were quite a puzzle. It took a while, but looking at the drawings in the kit's instructions, I finally got it back together. I'm sure you'll figure it out.

The problem with the choke not working is a mystery though. I have never seen the choke adjustment proceedure I gave you fail to make the choke work flawlessly unless there is a hardware problem (a broken part).

Don't give up!

Try replacing the choke pull off. The engine vacuum is what controls the choke.

Its not that the choke was not working....it was working a bit too well. What I mean by this is that the choke plate was closed too far and the engine needed more air. That is why I had to open the choke plate by hand until it stayed open on its own.
I should have just adjusted it so that when cold the choke plate was not fully closed and all would have been fine. The engine will start and run without the choke but I have to keep my foot on the pedal to keep the RPMs up....doing what the fast idle cam does. But Nooooooo....I had to take it off....:bash

I'll get it back on there. I know where the cam for the idle goes...its the green one I have yet to figure out. Have not spent any time on it and probably will not be able to until the weekend.

Now..unless I am missing something....there is no vacuum choke pull-off on this carb. The electric choke pulls the plate open after a few minutes of running. The only vacuum pull-off I have is for the secondaries...and that is to keep them closed while the choke is on. I removed this long ago, but will probably put it back on as it really does not hinder secondaries operation.

All Q jets have a choke pull off and need it to control the gradual pull off of the choke blade. Some one must have removed it previously. The choke pull off is located on the top (air horn) with 2 screws and has a vacuum hose that connects close to the fuel inlet, the pull off has a screw adjustment whereas the secondary pull off is larger at the rear of the carb with out the adjuster.

Alright here we go. First the choke pull off or front vacuum break. As said it attaches with two philips screws to the air horn, with the vacuumpot facing forward (and the vacuumconnector facing to the fuel inlet). While your at it check your vacuum break, put vacuum on it and then relaise. It should fully extract in about 2 to 3 second (what I know). Connected to the vacuum break is the green air valve dashpot rod. It connects to the secondaries air valve lever (should go behind your choke).

The other green rod is the lower rod rod for the airvalve on the primaries. It goes into the cavaty between the primaries and the choke (in the airhorn). And it connects down below to the lower choke rod lever. Not very easy to reconnect but it is possible. For more info try '81 Shop Manual Chapter 6C4.

I have the choke pull-off and will put it back on as soon as I figure out how the green lever behind the electric choke goes. I know the shaft goes into the carb and connects to the rod for the primaries air valve...and yep that is not going to be easy to put back on. But I have a method that I think will work. I just have not been able to get that green lever (not rod) back into its proper place. I know where the green rod goes between the secondaries air valve and this green lever...its still just how this green lever sits on the primary throttle plate cam...the spring loaded one.

Very difficult to try to describe in words...I will be checking all the diagrams in the manual...hopefully one of them shows how this all goes.

Would rather be working on that carb than be at work......

You need that pull off! It is not just for the choke, it has two functions.

I have to contradict what someone said earlier; the '81, in spite of what one diagram in the assembly manual may suggest, only has one dashpot, located in the front.

In addition to choke function, that device keeps the secondary air valve movement controlled. Otherwise you can get erradic performance as you transition to the secondaries.

God bless, Sensei

I hope to be able to spend some time on the '81 this weekend as I would sure like to have it all back together. I will be checking the manual and checking all the adjustments.

Well after studying the manual for a few minutes I saw what I was trying to do incorrectly when re-installing the electric choke. Even got the choke plate rod to go in...twice actually....so that's back on now.

Put the choke pull-off back on and now I remember why I took it off....it doesn't do anything because I think it is so far out of adjustment. It is supposed to engage the green tang to pull the choke off....nope....soooo...I have some adjustments to do. I do not have the angle gauge that is shown in the book, so not sure how far I will get with this. I still may end up sending the carb in for rebuild or get a replacement after all.

On to the adjustments.......:W

Follwed the Lars chock adjustment procedure to the letter....couple of things are left out...but pretty good.

Everything adjusted now....can't wait to start it up and see how the choke operates. Have to wait a bit though...need to make sure all the neighbors are awake as the sidepipes are a bit loud in the garage.

Sensei...thanks so much for sending me that file.
