I want to put electric exhaust cutouts on my Vette. They seem like a better alternative to an exhaust system because you can shut them when your head hurts (or just want quiet), and you can open them when you want performance (or to be heard)!

Does anyone have any suggestions on brands of exhaust cutouts?

Can I install them without welding (I dont have a welder, and dont know how to weld, yet)?

Where is the best place to install them?

Can I wire them to the wires under the arm rest for what the manual says is for a CB radio?

Any other advice?

Thanks a lot, everyone has been so hellpful on this site!!!!!

The problem with cutouts is that there is damn little room to put them anywhere on a Vette and no room for an extra pipe (so exhaust doesn't exit under the car) I've had muffler eliminators on my '96 for several years. For me, it's adequately quiet on both town and freeway driving (I think the cats keep it fairly quiet) and it sounds really great when I put my foot in it :_rock. I get a resonance at about 3K on the tach but only at 3K. Much cheaper than cutouts. My 2 sense.

mid am has a set of bi-modal that sound really good but are kinda pricey has a vacuum pod that either the computer controls or you can hook up a electric over vac switch that you control dont know if they make a unit for c-4s but if you got the bucks i'm sure you will be able to find something. but if i did something like that make sure that you can dump it out the back might be able to find a muffler shop that really knows what he's doing and rig you a four way off your y pipe and just fit a couple of dumps in it good luck i've always found a couple of series 40 flowmasters sound just as good

I built a custom exhaust for my C 4 and run 3 inch pipe from the headers to the rear bumper but I put electric cutouts in the straight pipe and cut a hole and welded a 3 inch elbow and built a home made muffler that runs parallel to the straight pipe.
Kinda hard to explain it I need to take some pictures.
I have stainless tips and I can run closed or adjust it to the level that I want or go wide open.
I been using them for 4 years without a problem.
Closed it is not all that loud NO resonance but open it is LOUD
Here is what I'm using. McCord Power Plate - Ordering Your MPP

Yeah, if you can get some pics it would be easier to understand. Do you still use cats, and is it bolt on or welded (don't know how to weld). Thanks for your reply!

I have NO cats it is straight from the headers to the rear bumper.

The cutouts come with plates that must be welded to the pipe and they bolt to the plate.
Any custom installation will require welding.

The system that I built for mine is ALL CUSTOM made and it took a whole lot of time cutting grinding and welding but it is awesome now that I have it done.
My home built mufflers run parallel to the straight pipe and are in the location of where the stock mufflers were.

Their is no room under the car and you do not want all the noise and fumes dumped out under the car anyway.

I have all the tools and the ability to do this stuff so I can do it all at home but it would be hard to find a shop that can do this and do it right.

I am planning on building exhaust from cat back on my 90 next week. I am planning on doing something similar with cutouts, which I can machine myself on a CNC mill at work.
I know it will be just a little heavier but I have scrap 16 ga. 304 stainless that I can use for this. My cost on this will be minimal. I hope you can get some pictures posted,it would help me a lot. Also How did you make your mufflers?

Thank you
Glenn

Sorry but at this time a picture would be impossible.
My car is in my back garage that I use for long term storage.

I would have to bring it up to my shop and put it on jacks stands.

We have snow on the ground here and the vette would not make it Even if I tried but since I'm waiting to have back surgery their is no way that I can put it up on jack stands at this time.

I have all 3 inch pipe and the cutout is in the straight pipe ahead of the cutout I made a 3 inch hole and welded on a elbow and run a 3 inch pipe parallel to the other pipe but i welded washers on a piece of 1 3/4" pipe and the washers were turned out on a lathe to fit tight and I spot welded that into the 3 inch pipe.

I drilled a lot of small holes in the smaller pipe and used a torch to heat red hot and with a long center punch pry the wall of the pipe to create a louver on the front half to force the gasses into the outer chamber and the back half is bent to force it back into the 1 3/4 pipe.

This makes a effective muffler and both 3 inch pipes fit into a stainless tip that can be seen in the photo in this link.

Nice description. Also do you see any HP gain with your exhaust and/or in your opinion is there any mesurable increase in HP with a cut-out or custom exhaust?

Also, not to hi-jack the thread but I love the look of that 87. What size rears are those, 285's or are they bigger? I need to see more pics of the wheel tire combo please and good luck on your surgery!

The car is a 89.

The wheel is a 11 x17 and the tire is a 315-35-17 G-Force KD

I have a 3 inch pipe from the headers to the rear when the cutouts are open. I think I could benefit from a bigger exhaust I have a Supercharged and Nitrous Injected 406 making 1178 HP.

Open this one up and it will cure any constipation problem you may of had.:boogie

Here is a link to another photo of the wheel tire combo.

Wow that is a lot of ponies under that hood! Nice work!

I need to drive 10 miles from home to find a stop light.

That must take about 3 seconds with that setup! Please post a thread with more engine shots and details (so we don't hijack this thread any more that we have already!) I'm sure a lot of us would be interested (and envious!)

WOW!!!!!

I guess you did increase the HP with the custom exhaust! I bet the 406 cu inch, forced induction with the bottle helps as well!!!!

I think this car needs it's own thread! I want to see more!

Any 1/4 mile times with this thing? It would make a Z06 cry like a baby!
