New to the board, as poster. I could use some help
with build dates for resto. 327 engine. Could someone
reply with casting dates for early 327 for the car birthday
of somewhere near mine. oct 28,1966. Only want to
purchase the block and heads one time if possible!

Thanks
Mike

Engine Numbers

If you look in Noland Adams book on the complete restoration of these cars, he shows block casting dates between H 18 6 and H 30 6 depending on serial number of your car. Also, he shows at least one 1966 block was used in the early '67 cars so it could be a possibility of either of the two block part numbers: 3892657 ('67) or 3858174 ('66).

If you're trying to restore the car 'NCRS style' the casting date of the block should preceede the car assembly date by six months or less (three or less is better) Obviously the engine assembly (build) date must be after the casting date and before the car assembly date.

Thanks for your replies ,vettehead and firemist.

Firemist, I do not have the nolan book could you further define
the numbers if i give the sn of the car. I should have posted
the number to start with, sorry.

Thanks Mike.

PS I just now finished a drive of a lifetime in red Ferrari 550.
Carbon fiber everything. I hope you all get to give this a try
sometime. not mine however!

There is a range of block casting numbers in the book with the following info noted:

VIN Engine Code Block casting M-DD-Y

194377S100511 V0823HE H 18 6

194677S101805 V0919HO I 6 6

194677S102010 V0913HT H 30 6

194377S102706 V0823HT H 18 6

I think you can see the pattern here, so something in this range should be right for you car. Enjoy!

Thank you Firemist,

I have looked closely at the list you supplied from the book.
I believe I can estimate the approx. date that would work
however on close examination of the list it leads to many
questions ie. sn 511 cast date of h-18 build date of 8-23
sn 2706 cast date of h-18 build date of 8-23
sn1805 cast date of I-6 build date of 9-19
sn2010 cast date of h-30 build date of 9-13

#512 looks ok cast 5 days before built 8/23
#2706 looks unusual, build date vs assigned sn 2 months later
#2010 dates looks ok build about 14 days after cast
#1805 dates looks unusual in sequence built 9/19 cast 10/6

Just wondering do other years look this screwy?

Thanks again
Mike

As I look at the data in the table, it seems that as the production year progressed, the casting dates and production dates became more consistent and separated by only a few dates. The early production builds show the greatest dispersion. The 2010 VIN block appears to be a left over '66 block that was probably assembled for '67 production. Can't explain the other questions you raised. My '67 was built in March.

The 8174 block is not accepted for a '67 in NCRS judging; any 2657 block cast within six months prior to your car's build date will judge with full credit, although the "norm" is generally within two to four weeks, with many deviations.

Thanks again Firemist and thank you JohnZ for your input
as well.

Thanks
Mike
