88 Black Coupe w/96 bumpers
I just purchased an 88 Coupe here in Toronto. Car is completely stock, with the exception of Flowmaster mufflers. The resonance it produces is so loud that I cannot hear the radio, which will eventually be replaced once I can actually hear it. So, Mid-America sells a factory replacement kit (mufflers only) for $199. Does anyone know if it's a decent system?

Someone here mentioned that resonance could be due to the installation. Is this true? Is there anything I can do to the currentl system to quiet it down?

Just starting to learn about Corvettes. I've been a Mustang 5.0 man for years.

Resonance is a problem with the coupe if you put on free flow exhaust. That is why
I won't do it with my C4, I opted for heads/cam instead.

If you don't mind loosing a few ponies, go back to stock mufflers. Also, make sure the
pipes are stock size. Is the stock resonator still there? That could be an issue also. You really
need to know if the prior owner replaced just the mufflers or "cat back"--everything from the
cat converters aft. Ask around--the L98 exhaust design is different than what I have.

When I bought the LT1 first thing I did was took off the cats and the original mufflers, then put on a set of nice "magnaflow" free flow exhaust.

Then I haved the same problem with noice an resonance. Someone in this forum said it could be solved putting a crossover balance tube just ahead the spare tire (as far back as you can)

I did it and ¡What a difference it made! It feels and sounds greate, I would never go back to the stock mufflers they are very restrictive! (I did it in my 91 L98) two weeks ago before I sold it and believe me There is a BIG diference that you can feel.

It worked for me and others give it a try!

Where exactly would this cross over pipe go? Are there
any pics you and direct me to? I am interested in this method,
rather than changing mufflers!

Thanks a million

Hi there,

I hope you can see the tube between the two main pipes just ahead the spare tire.

This tube improved performance in the LT1 in all aspects (sound, resonance & engine performance) I hope it will do the same in your L98.

See you,

George

SORRY THE PICTURE NEVER WENT OUT!!!

But it is just a tube same size (2 1/2" I believe in your L98) connecting the two main pipes.
