I bought a GMPP major $0 deductable in October as my factory warranty was up. You can haggle price just as you would buying a car. My brother in law was the finace manager and that may have helped on the price. 4 years and 32,000 miles added to what was on my vette (10,000) for $750 plus tax. It is transferable.

Thats is a good price and one that perhaps we can all try to negoiate towards.

Thanks,

Craig

I bought the GM plan with $100 deductable. I mostly want it as insurance against big ticket items not every little thing. It saved me a few hundred bucks up front. so If I would have to pay $100 for three times it ends up costing the same. any more than 3 times I lose any less than 3 times I win. I hate having it worked on for small stuff that they are not really into doing and may just rush through.

Very good point.

For major problems yes! Minor problems, I will repair myself and at my cost. I'm not comfortable with a tech who just serviced a Geo now working on my Vette. This is why I bought at a Vette/Cad only Dealership. Not Local Though!

I agree the Cadi / Chevy dealership I mostly use does a very good job. They are used to working on $50K+ cars and trucks. I also have to admit that I have had good service at the local Saab / Chevy dealership. There seems to be a certain esprit de corps among the workers at these high-end brands. They really take pride in their work.

Hmmmmmm I have a friend who owns a Cadillac dealership.

Hi Craig,

Well, I said I would follow up in a month or two before my warranty ran out, and I nearly made a big mistake by waiting too long.

I just got my GMPP extended warranty yesterday, with not a moment to spare. I would like to add a few things for those who may follow this thread later:

1) Warranty Direct does not offer extended warranty on Z06's.
2) GMPP will only allow you to purchase an extended warranty during the period that the standard warranty is in effect. I bought my car on April 9, 2002, and just started getting serious about researching extended warranties yesterday (April 8, 2005). After the first phone call I realized it was now or never. Luckily for me, no service records were opened up on the car while it sat on the lot, or I would be out of luck.
3) The extended warranty takes effect from the day that you buy it. I.e. the mileage and years that you buy start at the point that you buy it.

FYI, my car has 15,600 miles. I got an additional 5 years and 40k miles, Zero deductible, for $1390 through Tom Jumper Chevrolet. They were able to match Fitchner's price, albeit with a bit of "back and forth" between sales and service ;)

So basically, my warranty (standard plus extended) will be for a total of 8 years, 55k miles. (I don't put lots of miles on it).

Hi Tammy, Thanks for the good info. Cutting it a little close huh? As mentioned above, my friend owns a Cadillac dealership. I talked to him and he will sell me the extended warranty at his cost. I will probably get it in a year or so as my warranty will be up in March 2005.

I was offered an extended warrenty for my 2000 coupe. I blew up the clutch, had the body control module replaced and drivers side door module replaced along with an oil leak fixed. The extended warranty would have been 2000 dollars for a 7 year bumper to bumper. I would have been about 3000 dollars ahead if I did purchase it. I knew getting the 'vette fixed would be expensive, but I didn't know there would be so many bugs in the system on a 3 year old car. There was a time when I didn't really want to drive it because I couldn't afford another repair bill. - Ron

Ron,

Perhaps your info below is a note to all. "Can you say American car?" Unfortunately, American quality isn't up to par. I imagine though that you did more than simply wear out the clutch considering that the repairs cost you about $5K. OUCH!!!!!

Murph:

Can you confirm for me the exact details of your GMPP extended warranty?

I have an 02 Z06 with 11K that will run out of factory warranty in 2 months. I can get a 5 year 40,000 extended warranty for $1500 (GMPP, MajorGuard, 0 Deductible) thru my local dealership.

I know the 5 years is an add on from the time of sale. So when I sign-up I will be covered until summer 2010. I was told the 40,000 was the total odometer reading including the 11K already on the car.

Does that sound right? Or would you expect it to be added to the 11K so carry forward to 51K?

I havent signed up yet so your info will be very helpful.

I was quoted @1000.00 for a $0 deductable 3/36 bumper to bumper by Ridgeway Chevy.

My factory warranty expires in August and I will be purchasing that warranty at that time. I figure I will get my money's worth the next time the fuel guage acts up.

That does not sound right. The 40,000 should add on to the mileage on the car at the time you purchase the warranty.

There are almost infinite varieties of months/mileage combinations for GMPP extended warranties with prices varying accordingly and by dealership. The period & mileage are almost always referenced to total odometer, and date of vehicle purchase. You should double check when that 5 year clock starts.

If you don't put up many miles, then the 5 yr/40k deal might make sense. Depending on your usage, you could also ask about 5 yr/60k, 6yr/75k, 4 yr/48k, or even 6 yr/36k. FWIW, the higher the mileage, the quicker the prices rise.<g>

Now, for my personal experience.....I bought a 90 L98 with a 6 yr/60k extended warranty (meaning 3 more years after the factory warranty expired and a total odo of 60k) that paid for itself many times over. Managed to replace multiple alternators, clutch master and slave, water pump, PS pump and intake manifold gaskets under that warranty. Once the warranty expired, I ran it to 230,000 mi with minimal additional problems until an F150 trashed the right side of the car.

That was then and this is now. My 02 Z06 has 90,000 mi. I autox almost every weekend and run open track events 2-4 times each year. I would have had exactly zero claims on the extended warranty I had considered buying for about $1900 (48 mo/75,000 mi).

Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but I found better uses for the $1900 than giving it to an already wealthy dealership!<g>

But if you want to pursue the extended warranty, get quotes on multiple period and mileage options that may be suitable for you and then get competitive quotes from other dealers. You'll be surprised at how much the prices will vary.

Hope this helps...

I posted this poll in 11/04 and am now at the critical point of getting an extended warranty with less than a month before my 3/36K expires. I only have about 12,500 miles on my 2003 Z06. In the year and a half that I have owned it I have put 3K miles on it and just yesterday it has gone into the shop for the second time.

The first time they worked on the following: right rear seal, gas filler tube, drivers seat, front radio bezel popping out, console lid hard to open, fuel gage improper reading, trunk not popping up when released.

It is now in for a rear seal leak again.

I talked to my Caddilac dealer friend and he gave me prices, but I think Fichtner may be a little less (from what i saw on another post). I will be contacting Fichtner Chevrolet tomorrow to get a quote. Sort of like Tammy, I am probably going for the 5/yr 50Kmi, but with a $100 deductible.

Hm, dealership monkeys?????:eyerole
Real nice.
I AM A DEALERSHIP MONKEY AND I AM VERY PROUD OF THAT FACT.
Without my dealership training, I would NEVER BE AS GOOD as my customer satisfaction index says I am.

Dealer Monkey

If it is any consolation, I DO trust my car to the dealer monkeys:D . But I know those who don't and actually call them that. That is how I came up with the term for the poll. I dropped off my car for monkey service yesterday (Sat):upthumbs. No disrespect intended.

They have very good dealer monkeys at my local Chevy dealer. Always fixed my problems. I paid $900.00 for my gmpp major guard for a 36/36,000 coverage with a $200.00 deductable. I am very happy I bought it, considering I never purchase these extended warranties for anything.

When this poll came out I clicked "undecided".
Well, I just picked up the car from the dealer. I had 3 issues fixed.
1) service active handling, service traction control, service abs flashed when I started the car. Code 1224 was stored. They had to replace the EBTCM (Or EBCM)
2) small fluid leak around rear axle
3) (unbknownst to me) leak around the oil pan gasket.

The total would have been over $2500 (not counting the rental car over the weekend) if I had not had the extended warranty. I walked out with n/c for everything.

So... I am really glad I spent that money on the warranty.

Tammy
