I have an 02 Z06 with 11K that will run out of factory warranty in 2 months. I can get a 5 year 40,000 extended warranty for $1500 (GMPP, MajorGuard, 0 Deductible) thru my local dealership.
I know the 5 years is an add on from the time of sale. So when I sign-up I will be covered until summer 2010. I was told the 40,000 was the total odometer reading including the 11K already on the car.
Does that sound right? Or would you expect it to be added to the 11K so carry forward to 51K?
There are almost infinite varieties of months/mileage combinations for GMPP extended warranties with prices varying accordingly and by dealership. The period & mileage are almost always referenced to total odometer, and date of vehicle purchase. You should double check when that 5 year clock starts.
If you don't put up many miles, then the 5 yr/40k deal might make sense. Depending on your usage, you could also ask about 5 yr/60k, 6yr/75k, 4 yr/48k, or even 6 yr/36k. FWIW, the higher the mileage, the quicker the prices rise.<g>
Now, for my personal experience.....I bought a 90 L98 with a 6 yr/60k extended warranty (meaning 3 more years after the factory warranty expired and a total odo of 60k) that paid for itself many times over. Managed to replace multiple alternators, clutch master and slave, water pump, PS pump and intake manifold gaskets under that warranty. Once the warranty expired, I ran it to 230,000 mi with minimal additional problems until an F150 trashed the right side of the car.
That was then and this is now. My 02 Z06 has 90,000 mi. I autox almost every weekend and run open track events 2-4 times each year. I would have had exactly zero claims on the extended warranty I had considered buying for about $1900 (48 mo/75,000 mi).
Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but I found better uses for the $1900 than giving it to an already wealthy dealership!<g>
But if you want to pursue the extended warranty, get quotes on multiple period and mileage options that may be suitable for you and then get competitive quotes from other dealers. You'll be surprised at how much the prices will vary.
Hope this helps...
