I have done this on 93 to 96 LT1 and LT4 equipped cars. It’s very simple and costs about 3 bucks for a nice chrome switch. The original workings of the fans are not affected, you can just override any time you want, but the computer will still turn them on and off if you don’t. This is for both fans, and with a 160 Therm, the temp on my 95 LT1 never goes above 190 in hot traffic. (100 plus day last summer.) I always solder and heat shrink tube rap all wires. As you are only connecting them to a “ground” there is little chance of blowing a fuse or doing any damage.

When looking in the wire bundle, the thicker wires carry power (+) and the thin ones are mostly ground wires. If you cut and ground the wrong one during “testing” it should be no problem, just repair the cut.
I used a digital mulitimeter with a needle like probe to pierce the wire without cutting. Both wires are soldered together and run back to the switch, the other pole on the switch just goes to a metal part on the inside underpanel of the dash board, solder an eyelet to the end of the wire and screw it down. Wire thickness is not an issue as little current goes through it.

fan switch ...

thank you very much for the info &the pics. it was very helpful

I'm curious about something, I have a 94 and it seems that my analog temp gauge sometimes will get upwards of 250-260 and yet my digital will ride around 215, I guess my first question is which one should I trust and do they both use the same sending unit for the readings? and realisticly what is the temp that would be considered "Overheating"? any suggestions?
thanks

i think they both use the same sending unit, i couldnt say if one or the other was the accurate one, but i would duess the digital gauge is closer to correct. If your car was running 250 to 260 often i would think you would have had some tell tale signs, like steam coming from the overflow tank or a burst hose, and the engine would not be running right., knocking and low oil pressure.

As the fans are set to come on so high, i dont believe there is a wide margin for overheating, my guess would be 240.

On my car, when its about 80 degrees outside, and i open the hood, i can tell right away if the engin was running at 185 or 230 before shut down. the differance in heat on the top of the plenum is tremendous.

Thanks for the help.;worship

I am just a little confused.... the light green and light blue wires both go to one side of the switch, then the other side goes to a ground? I assume the light green wire is for one fan, and the light blue is for the other, so you could set up two switches and turn them on and off independently?

thanks for the clarification... where did you run the wires through the fire wall? is there an easy place to do it? I was thinking about putting a switch (or switches) in the ashtray area... this all depends on how difficult it would be. I have not run wires between the engine compartment and interior before, so I am a bit shady in this area on what to do. thanks!

I'd like info on this mod also, after all the forum research etc. it seems the best bet is to just be able to turn em on when it gets too hot, most often mine runs pretty normal.

There is a grommet behind the battery, slighty above and to the left. Dont have to remove the battery.

I cant post any more pictures for now, i need to delete some.

Send me and email and i will send you back a picture. Also a good pic of the coolent bypass mod.

On my 85 I have both fans, stock for Z-51, but can only find one relay on the drivers side fenderwell....where is the other one?

It is not on the radiator housing like was earlier suggested.

fan relays

looking at the picture of the fan relays there are three relays... what is the upper relay?

The other relay is behind the battery.

I only seem to have one fan on my 1988 L98. What am I missing?

If you only have one fan, it just means your car does not have the Z51 option. The Z51 L98 has one fan in back of the radiator and one on the front of the radiator.

On my 91 I wired the secondary fan to a switch, had it on most of the time. I then wired the primary to a low temp switch installed in the head. Worked great. Think I'll wire my 96 secondary fan to a switch and leave it on. That way I don't force the primary fan to work over time in cooling the car.
