Been stumped for awhile on my alternator belt. Tried to adjust several times and not luck. After looking at it closer - the belt fits in the alternator pulley but looks small on the drive pulley. It wasn't sitting at the top of the grooves like it should. So ended up putting a different pulley on the alternator (same size grooves as drive pulley) and a bigger belt (17). The problem is fixed. All of the manuals call for a 15 belt so this doesn't make a lot of sense but it looks right and works right finally.

Thanks for the heads up Lance!

Mine does the same above 3500 rpm. At first I thought it was the airpump but after disconnecting one beld at the time I found out the steering pump is hte problem. After a closer look the steering pump doesn't align properly with the crankshaft pulley.

Good luck with the vette! :)

Greetings Peter

Yes the guys at Carter alternator here in Louisville helped me put a pulley on my existing alternator. They did some adjustments on the power steering also as it didn't line up exactly right either. I noticed my Dads 75 has the same squeal every once in awhile (although not as often as mine), and his belt is too small for the drive pulley also. I guess over they years people replaced alternators and put smaller belts on them when they realized the pulleys weren't the same and it worked?

It seems to be running better also. I roasted the heck out my tires effortlessly in my company's parking lot yesterday afternoon :D. Belt seems more quiet too. I used to hear a "rattling sound" from the belt area before when the car was idling.
