Know what ya mean HD....seems like everything is going up, up, up.....everything is tied to oil prices.....I don't blame ya for picking that piece up....I would do the same. 810 to move something 500 miles is ridiculous, fuel surcharge this...cost of doing business!
I'm probably a good 4 weeks away from starting the framing. Week of travelling and a couple weeks of the beach are in my future. No telling what a 2 x 4 is gonna cost then. Need a few weeks to recover after shelling out the dinero's for the rebar.
Tell them Chinese to lay off the lumber, steel and concrete....they didn't need it for the Great Wall.....

Getting there....

Got all my walls up and covered....next is the roof. Hopefully I can knock that out this weekend.

So far I have been told twice to stop construction by the current HOA neighborhood nazi's.....they evidently didn't get the approval letter from the previous Arch. Ctl Cmtee....hasn't slowed me down a bit. I like a good fight when I know I'm right.

I plan to run power to this thing from the 200 amp breaker box in the attached garage. Anyone know how to run this? I want to run adequate power out to the garage to another multi breaker box and split off there to my lights/receptacles, etc. Could always get an electrician to come out but I'm pinching pennies....any ideas you guys have would be appreciated.

Hey that's starting to look like a garage. I sure am glad i don't live in one of those places. Had a friend who went out and bought a really nice front door for his house. The Home owners assoc (nazis) made him take it down because it didn't look like the rest of the doors in the neighborhood.

I was going to run elec to my garage from the house. My bro who is an elec said that I could come off at the bottom of the meterbase. But, since the meter is on the other side of the house, and it is about 75 yards out to the new building, I've decide to go ahead and plant another untility pole. I'm not an electrician and I do have a healthy respect for it.

Last weekend I did get the windows and walk thru doors in. I was going to paint the floor but the instructions on the paint said that the concrete has to cure at least 30 days before painting. So I'll just have to wait until I get home on Labor day to do that chore. I did park the rustang and my tractor in the new garage before I left. looks like I'll have to decide who gets to go inside and who gets left outside. I know the vettes will for sure be inside.

I ran 60amp 220v service to my garage from my main breaker at the house. Luckily it was on the same side as my detached garage. I had to drill a 2" hole in the side of the house, install a 60amp 220 double pole breaker inside, feed my burial grade 60A - (1 red, 1 black, 1 white, 1 ground) through a 90* conduit elbow, and about 5-7' of pvc conduit. Doug a trench 18" deep between the house and the garage after having utility companies come out and mark there lines. Since my cable was direct bury capable, my PVC line goes from my "hole" in the side of the house to the 18" under ground level. Then it is the cable at the bottom of the trench to the garage, where it is fed into another 3' of pvc conduit, to another elbow, and into the garage, up the inside of wall to the breaker box. I installed another grounding rod at the garage to be safe, even though the cable I ran to the garage has a ground cable included. Dug a posthole sized hole filled it with water, and stuck the 10' rod in the ground as far as I could. Then, lift the rod out and re-insert it in the same hole. Do this about 10-15 more times and voila! the 10' copper rode was completely in the ground except for about 10". A sledge drove it the rest of the way. Luckily for me, we have VERY DEEP topsoil with now boulders or rocks. I ran the incoming cable directly to the lugs on the garage panel. I have 4 15A breakers for lights and outlets. And one 20A (or 30 I cant remember right now cause Im at work) to run 220 to a small welder. I installed four 4' shoplights and a dusk-dawn exterior light that also is a motion detector.

Sounds like a good plan, I decided to put a 100 amp main breaker panel in my garage running 3-#4 & 1-#6 ground to the house service all in conduit. The idea of an extra ground rod is a good choice because of the additional runs of wire there is no such thing of having too much protection. On all my receptacle circuits will have a ground fault receptacle and the remainder of the runs will be protected too. I hope to find a good used LP or Kerosene furnace from a mobile home to put out there to cut the chill when working on the Vette.

I'm still debating the floor paint. There are some local companies that do solid colors and granite look but it can get expensive. Just gotta make up my mind whether to do it myself or let someone else do it.

Sent a letter to the neighborhood nazi's, hopefully they won't be bothering me anymore.

Sounds like you have done what I had in mind. I have an1 1/4" pipe buried in the slab coming up inside the wall. I'll end up running wire out the house and thru the conduit as you have done. I have a 100 amp box installed in the detached, I just wonder if 60a would be enuff. Think I'll run 75 to 100 and if I use it so be it.

I want to run adequate lighting, adequate outlets (current 3 1/2 car garage has 3 outlets!) a wall mounted fan, air compressor, outside coach lights, door light and maybe some flood lights. Will also have computer, fridge, stereo. I hear you can run about 4 flourescent fixtures off a 15/20 amp breaker.

Was the rod you buried copper or just steel? I will probably do this as well since I didn't ground anything before pouring the slab.

Amen on the ground rod.....I too have to have a GFCI installed. So all your outlets are run in sync with the GFCI in case it blows all the outlets become dead? That would make sense and seems the same way inside the house.

Think I'm gonna get a local electrician to smoke it over once I have it done. No sense taking any chances.

Know what ya mean about the furnace but I'm thinking the other extreme. I want either a wall mounted fan or windoe unit to beat the heat. I'm sure the HOA would love that unit hanging out the window!

Hey Roadster. Make sure that when the HOA comes over to ofer them a beer from the beer frig.

The second project we are doing is the kitchen. Part of the agreement over the new corvette home was to re-do the kitchen. That was done to ensure peace in the Murray camp. The wife has picked out the new frig she wants. I get the old one to put in the garage for the beer frig.

As far as painting the floor. I wasn't going to do it until I talked to the contractor. His take is that if you don't cover it with something, oil stains will be come part of the decor of the concrete. The oil will not come out once it soaks in to the concrete. So I went to Home Depot and bought the stuff from Bear to do my floor with. I was just going to use some exterior enamel. But it was right at the same price as the Bear stuff for garage floors. It was only $95.00 for a 5 gallion bucket and they had a $20.00 mail in rebate. So I only paid $75.00. I know it has all of these steps to take to ensure that the paint bonds to the floor and I know that I may be flerting with a future pain it the a**. But after talking to the guy at the counter that mixed the paint for me I am just going to roll in on. I may be in trouble but heck with it. I figure the cost savings of not having it done by a pro I could afford to touch up the spots in the years to come when it is needed. The other thing is that you have to wait at least 30 days from when the concrete was poured before you use it. This to ensure the concrete is fully cured. I figure by the time I get back home (Labor Day) it will be ready to be painted.

Right now I am faced with what to do about the roll up door. I think I may have to drop the opening to 10' so the door track doesn't have such an acute angle at the top. The other option is to get roll door. Sat. I went to the stroage site where I have my Z-06 stored at up here in Mass. I looked at the door that was on the unit and noticed that it is some sort of drum door but with out the drum. The door rolls upon itself when you open the door. I need to look at U.S. doors, the maker of that door, and see what the prices are like. I am sure they are cheap since these self-storage places are not about to spend money on good doors only to have the renters break them. If figure that if these types of doors can take the abuse that the renters give them then they should work fine for my application. Plus, it takes up very little space at the top of the door opening.

Well guys my wife finally asked why I buried 2 conduits, 1- 1 1/2" & 1- 1" to the new garage. Well the larger one is for the power feed and the other is phone, TV cable, intercom run. SOOOOO she said the intercom is for when she needs to get my attention and I replied NO its for when the refrig is getting low on beer and she needs to bring more out, she laughed at that, I think. You bet. Two years ago I was planning for the garage. This past winter when I was putting the finishing touches on getting the project on the road, the War Department chimed in and wanted to know what she was getting out of the deal. So I asked what she wanted, within reason, and the kitchen project came up. long story short is that it is a some-what kitchen make over. With new counter tops, dishwasher, frig, flooring, sink, and yes table. To the tune of about $14,000. Man, I didn't know renovations cost so much. Oh well, to keep peace in the came and to keep the War Department happy I'm funding the project. The funny thing is that she has HER money but yet I'm paying for both the new building and the kitchen. What gives on that? I have heard it said that after you get married that "What's hers is hers and what's yours is hers:L".

Finally got some rafters up last nite.....that felt good.....

I'm with ya...I'm running cable/phone/wireless out there just in case I have to start living out there.....got an old computer going in, got an old pay phone (touch tone,no coin needed) and I think I'm gonna get one of those Maytag Skyboxes from Home Depot to keep the frosties frosty.....

Mine hasn't complained yet, hasn't made any demands either so not sure if thats gonna be a problem or not....how can she complain? She drives the c5 everyday and I spend every good weekend jerking that boat out the garage so she can tan herself on the lake. With the new garage she won't even have to help me put it back up on Sunday nites....I'll be able to back it straight in by myself.

The rod looked like it was copper coated steel.

I ran 60a 220v service as I don't have much electrical needs in the 1.5 car garage. I've got a little air compressor, just large enough to run some nail guns for woodworking/cabinetmaking.

I could have/maybe should have run more than 60a but the 60a wire was about all I could find in direct burial grade. of Course I didn't sped too much time looking around

ruby, thanks for the info....I saw my buddies garage the other day and he had the copper rod buried too. Guess thats now on my list as well.

Finished up block and band last nite, guys are coming to deck and tar paper tomorrow. Hopefully roof next week. Ordered brick this week. Should get garage door installed next week as well. Nothing left for me to do but fascia and soffit, electrical and the driveway reform up to the garage. It's been a long 4 months so far. I'm ready to park a boat in there!

Cool. Right now Im waiting on the driveway too. I'm the neighborhood redneck because Im still parking the vette in there right now, using 2x6's as a ramp to get up to the garage floor level after driving through the grass to get it to the garage. I guess it isn't too bad since I only drive it a time or two on the weekends. The asphalt should be in by end of next week.

Just remember the process for putting that copper rod in the ground , was WAAAY easier than I thought it would be - key is water!

I finally sat down and added it all up and with mortar and sand today I broke 9k...thats still about 16.50/sq ft. Better than the 35.00 they charged when I added four feet to my attached garage when the house was built.

This will be the last time. I 've done it, experienced it and doubt I would even attempt a dog house after this. Got some great tools (and knowledge) though as a result. I bet I could do 4 more of these in my neighborhood. Everyone keeps asking who is doing it, they seem disappointed when I say "Just me".

sounds like you have a good retirement job if you ever want it. I don't know, but you may want to think about the dog house just in case things go to hell in a handbasket and you have to move into it. At least the dog will keep you warm at night:L .

$16.50/sq ft is not bad. I'll have to total mine up and see what I paid. I an sort of at a stand still until I get home. however my new roll-up door is waiting. So at least it will be fully enclosed by the end of the month. I got a grear deal from DBCI doors ($615.00 for a 12' x 10'). It is the same type of door used at the self storage places. I fugure that if those doors can put up with the abuse that the renters give them then they should work well for my application. Plus it looks like it will be easy to maintain.

Last Friday they finally made it out to install my asphalt driveway. The first company I tried was a flop, they fired the guy who took my order and I never made it on the list. called themagain to get ANOTHER estimate, 3 weeks later and still havn't heard back from them. Contacted a different local company, and within two weeks (we've had some rain) Im no longer driving into the garage with 2x6 boards for ramps after driving through the grass

My first "project" on the vette will be replacing the radiator this weekend hopefully.

Already started my first woodworking project in the new shop.

Man I love having this space
